The Catholic Church did not conspire with Venice to sack Constantinople. Read Villehardouin’s history of the Fourth Crusade. The Franks made a deal with the Venetians to provide ships but failed to raise the agreed on sum of money so they had to do what the Venetians demanded. First they captured the Catholic city of Zadar (Zara) in Dalmatia for Venice (for which they were excommunicated by Pope Innocent III). Then they were persuaded by a member of the Byzantine imperial family to intervene to put him on the throne of the Byzantine Empire. One thing led to another and the Crusaders eventually captured and sacked Constantinople, which was a great tragedy, but it wasn’t planned in advance and the pope was certainly not privy to the Crusaders’ plans.

I joined a group of DODDS teachers on FB a few days ago. What was I thinking? I tried to reason with them. Their thought processes identical to Obama’s at the prayer breakfast i.e. Islam is a religion of peace; Christianity is as much at fault as Islam etc. etc. I wondered how such highly educated people could be so dense. The straw that broke the camel’s back a few minutes ago was when one of them posted, “Congratulations. If you are trying to convince us you are a zealot, you’ve succeeded.” I replied, “I was trying to reason with you but there is less and less chance of that. For what it’s worth, the zealots are the ones who put the Syrian pilot in a cage and burned him alive.” I then figured out how to “unjoin” that group. Life is too short for such nonsense. You can’t reason with them. God help us. I know why the country is in such sad shape with education being full of people who cannot see something as plain as the nose on their face. I then looked up Christ’s admonition to not throw your pearls before swine lest the turn around and rend you. Learned my lesson.
