Manhunt through Bogue Chitto swamp ends when suspect seeks ride from deputy

A raucous manhunt through the Bogue Chitto swamp that included four law enforcement agencies involving boats, canines and officers sloshing through dense woods ended when the man being sought unwittingly knocked on the window of a St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's deputy's pick up truck and asked for a ride early Wednesday (Jan. 28) morning, authorities said.

The deputy immediately handcuffed Dennis O'Keefe, 31, who police say was suspected in several thefts and burglaries in St. Tammany and was under investigation by Washington Parish authorities on suspicion of manufacturing and selling methamphetamine.

Two women were also arrested in the search, one of whom attempted to flee pursuing law enforcement officers by driving a getaway boat up the Bogue Chitto River while accompanied by a 7-year-old boy, according to a news release from the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office.

The chase stemmed from a warrant for O'Keefe that was issued by authorities in St. Tammany.

Washington Parish detectives determined that O'Keefe was staying at a camp on True Light Road and were conducting surveillance at that location, according to a news release. They observed O'Keefe, accompanied by a woman identified as Naomi Manton, 33, and a 7-year-old boy boating on the Bogue Chitto River.

Detectives identified themselves and asked O'Keefe to return to the bank so they could talk with him. Instead, O'Keefe steered the boat to the opposite bank of the river, got out and fled into the dense woods, the news release said.

Finding a canoe on the bank of the river, detectives used two makeshift paddles to cross the river in pursuit of O'Keefe. Meanwhile, the sheriff's office said Manton steered the boat back into the river and refused to yield to officers.

During the ordeal, the boy who was still in the boat, was crying and yelling, the news release said.

Nothing like a good old fashion fugitive chase through the swamps! Dogs and all. But they got their man.

This story sounds like something out of a movie.

It was later determined that O'Keefe waded in sloughs to disrupt the tracking dogs, the news release said.

I’ll have to admit this is the first “woman driving the getaway boat” story I’ve seen in a long time.

I’m sure it is buried somewhere in the article, but really? A multi agency manhunt in the swamps for petty property crimes and drug charges?

Good thing he knocked on the window, or they’d spend another couple hundred grand in overtime to catch their man.

Was anybody named Wendell?

‘Look. It’s Wendell’s truck. He’s dead. It’s over.’

Remember, overtime counts towards pension calculations, so it's all good.

Well we don’t tolerate criminals on the northshore. Keep the criminals in New Orleans.

It's the South and a lot of cops down here are good ol' boys. It's in their blood. I'm sure when the perp jumped off the boat and headed in the swamp the cop's looked at each other and said "are we gonna let that boy get away with this?"

Probably every good ol' boy cop down here just loves a swamp chase. Think about it, guns, dogs, boats heck it's just like huntin. And this is sportsman's paradise.

You're probably right! I think I might have over-analyzed this one.

I talked to a couple of local P.D. today, one of who is the jail warden. The one cop said he hated swamp chases and the jail warden shook her head and said “I don’t know why them boys love that chase so much.” Of course these two are city cops.
