I still have some of my more interesting ones, but never got as wrapped up in stamps as I did with coins (in both cases, almost exclusively foreign due to the wider variety).

My understanding was that a lot more of those Nazi stamps survived the war than was initially believed; I don’t think they cost very much even today. I have some from other areas from that time that are interesting as well (the protectorates set up in the former Czechoslovakia, for instance). I also have a couple of Tsarist stamps, as well as early 20th century Poland (1920s) and the “Danzig Free State”.

Brother, I understand the appeal of coins over stamps.

I still collect civil war covers, poster stamps and buy for resale - all of that is fine.

But I have been staggered to the point of speechless over some of the magnificent toning on both US and foreign coins. Floored to say the least. An AU/BU coin with a composition of a fine artist combined with good toning is something to behold.

I am not a fan of England in the least. In fact, this coin was minted during the Irish Potato famine. But still, marvel at such a stunning coin - and the toning.

The bottom line, I think, is collect something because you enjoy it and find other benefits, educational, artistic, whatever, not because you expect to make a lot of money.

If you do, more power to you, but it is just icing on the cake.

That’s exactly where I “plateaued”; when value became more important than the things I loved about collecting, it lost its lustre. My life circumstances had changed; I was saving for a home, and planning on starting a family - and money itself became much more important to me than it ever had been. I guess I grew up...

Still have my favorite pieces, though; it would be hard to part with them.

I think the first commemorative stamp ‘book’ issued by the USPS was in 1969. So, you’re missing the first 3 issues (69, 70, 71)? The first 3 years are an odd size and they went to the standard 8.5 x 11 size in ‘72 (I think).
