Delaware's Democratic Gov. Jack Markell has designated Feb. 12 as Charles Darwin Day in his state, to coincide with the explorer's 206th birthday, The Huffington Post reported.
Darwin presented his theory of evolution in "On the Origin of Species," published in 1859.
The Delaware proclamation was made at the initiative of Chuck Dyke, a member of Delaware Atheist Meetup. He put in a routine request for a special recognition through the website of the governor's office, according to Patheos, a site devoted to faith issues.
Markell cited Darwin's discoveries as "the foundation of modern biology [and] an essential tool in understanding the development of life on earth."
He proclaimed Feb. 12 as "a time to reflect and celebrate the importance of his scientific achievements."
About 60 percent of U.S. adults say "humans and other living things have evolved over time," according to a 2013 Pew Research Center survey.
About 24 percent of those who accept evolution also believe that a supreme being played a role in the evolutionary process.

Every group wants to show how important they think they are.
In view of the number of brain-dead hacks and idiots that make up the Delaware legislature, perhaps they can celebrate it by giving out Darwin Awards to deserving politicians too.
If there is a Charles Darwin Day, why not a Louis Pasteur Day? An Albert Einstein Day? A Nikola Tesla Day? A Watson and Crick Day?
The whole thing soon spirals out of any semblance of sanity or reality!!

Odd that they should still think Darwin is important, given that the THEORY of evolution has been thoroughly discredited in the past 20 years.
The atheists are no different than the globalwarmists. Despite massive evidence to the contrary, they still cling to their cult.
In 1992, President Bush announced his campaign for re-election on February 12. I knew he was in trouble, picking Charles Darwin’s birthday for the announcement.
What in the heck does that mean?
Even the most die-hard "Young Earth" Creationist believes humans and other living things have evolved (or de-evolved) over time. People 'evolve' over their own lifetimes.
Had they defined "evolved over time" as meaning 'goo to you' - their 60 percent would have been much lower. At least in the U.S.
There simply has not been enough time for the kind of evolution envisioned by the atheists to have happened. It’s been proven that the Earth cannot possibly be more than 10,000 years old. Science backs that up.
AND they still teach that debunked nonsense on government schools. They can teach the religion of evolution, but cannot even MENTION the Bible. Shame.

I, for one, think this is a brilliant move on the part of Gov. Markell and predict that it will produce a huge increase in sales tax revenue for his state – perhaps even the nation. In fact, I predict that within a few years, it will evolve into a two-day holiday with costumed children going door-to-door begging for treats on Feb. 11th, Darwineve. They’ll come scampering home to a tasty bowl of hot, primordial soup to take the February chill out of their bones, then play a rousing, family game of Pin the Tail on the Human. Ape, monolith, caveman, and Darwin costumes will be flying off the racks. Netflix downloads of “Planet of the Apes” and “2001, A Space Idiocy” will crash the system, forcing celebrants to purchase copies for themselves. There will be a huge run on bananas, pecans, and banana nut bread. With extra nuts.
Churches will hold alternative celebrations, calling them Adam-n-Eve-Eve parties. Of course, this being a winter festival, there won’t be many sales of fig leaf costumes, but there should be quite run on animal costumes. Children will bob for apples, but only win a prize if they can secure their apple without taking a bite out of it.
What a happy ending! The retailers are happy, the children are happy, the parents are happy… Happy Darwin Day, everybody!
I don't think I would say "proven" - although there is certainly good evidence that supports an ~ 10k year old earth (e.g., the amount of Helium in the atmosphere given the escape and generation rates).
That said, even if you went with the 4.6B year age (I think that is the latest number that they are teaching in schools) the 'macro evolution' model that is proposed is anti-Science. Defies all experimental observations, and goes in the face of the Second Law of Thermodynamics (I know, 'the Earth is not a Closed System'... doesn't matter for the processes being proposed). And I believe as we've learned more about Genetics, the long ages (over 10k years) is contrary to the effects of Genetic mutations -- which basically imply that the destructive mutations in our Genes build up over generations to render that organism unfeasible. I.e., if I use a photo-copier to copy an original, and then copy the copy, and keep doing that (not copying the original - but the latest copy), eventually the copy becomes unreadable.
So I'd say 'proven' is too hard a word - but 10k is a better fit to the data than what is being pitched in the schools.
