The name on the card that night in May seemed to draw as much anxiety as it did excitement.
Johnny Manziel, Quarterback, Texas A&M.
The former Heisman Trophy winner had been passed over 21 times, prompting a text from Manziel to then-Browns quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains that he wanted to "wreck this league" in Cleveland. The words were actually more R-rated, but the implication was clear.
Twitter erupted at the selection. A Cleveland radio host cheered and screamed openly on air. Manziel gave his "money" sign as he walked onstage to greet Roger Goodell.
By season's end, cheering had turned to frustration and anger as Manziel struggled mightily in almost six quarters as a starter, then was fined for being AWOL the final Saturday of the season. Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan resigned with two years left on his contract. Loggains was fired. The Browns openly discussed Manziel's viability as the franchise's quarterback at a wide-ranging postseason staff meeting about the roster. And at least a couple of Manziel's teammates were joking his text should have read "wreck this team."

And that was ...
First round hype, sixth round talent, zero commitment or dependability.
It was worth the fifteen yard penalty for taunting when one of the Bengals gave the money sign over Manziel after sacking him.
“zero commitment or dependability”
That’s the main problem.
Hopefully for the Browns organization and their fans, he can get his stuff together in season two or he will find his butt on the outs...
Sure hope my bucs take Marrioto.
As a hapless Buc fan, I do as well...
Winston is a time bomb ready to go off even though he ran a NFL style offense in College...
They need to sit Marcus Mariota butt on the bench for at least next season to acclimate him to a pro style offense...and earn the respect of his teammates and fans
Kinda liked JF when he was at ATM but in the NFL his dumb off field ash antics don’t cut it. Plus his body type and QB style is not in his favor. Oh well— we shall see what happens this year.
Cases in point:
I can go on and on but I think I have sickened enough stomachs here.
It's time to disband the NFL and raze all the stadiums to the ground.
Is there anyone who follows college and pro football who didn’t see this coming?
They won’t. The NFL playing style (big, old men running right at each other, the same plays over and over) isn’t conducive to Manziel’s dynamic style. Steve Young wouldn’t make it in today’s NFL.
Marrioto is smarter than Manziel, so that might help him, but I doubt he’ll succeed in the NFL either. Not because of him, but because of the NFL.
A certain line backer was accessory to murder (may have been the murderer) and tried to cover it up. That line backer had a long, celebrated career and is now a prominent analyst.
It won’t be long before more people realize that the NFL is not only evil, but is incredibly boring.
I don’t like Manziel, but he’s an amazing QB. I did see this coming because dynamic QBs can’t succeed in a banal league.
Agreed
You've been drinking too much of your screenname.
Or I’ve adopted yours.
The history of the NFL is littered with the bodies of quarterbacks who tore up the college ranks and were complete busts at the pro level. And in almost all of those cases the reason for the failure was a lack of self-discipline. The NFL is a whole different world. It takes discipline and drive and the desire to continuously adjust to your opponent. There is no doubt Manziel has the raw talent at quarterback. But does he have the ability to work at his position and spend the hours preparing for the next game and learning from the mistakes of the past? In his case I highly doubt it.
Deflated footballs are a greater threat than ISIS?
