Advice Sought for Internet service for My Home
1/23/2015 | lafroste

Posted on 01/23/2015 12:24:58 PM PST by lafroste

I have had it with my internet provider (Time Warner cable). They just keep jacking rates, nearly every month they go up. I live in a rural part of NC. Do I have any other options for internet out here? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

We like our DISH Internet service and it doesn’t go up in price that I’ve noticed.

Phone carrier provider? AT&T or Verizon?

All around. See if you can get it through ATT U-verse or your satellite television service provider.

I agree, otherwise, after using TW for the last 15 years, I have no complaints.
Have you tried doing a bundle ... TV + Internet is only $45 a month.

“They just keep jacking rates, nearly every month they go up.”

Several years ago I looked at buying stock in an internet and TV service provider. The prospectus guaranteed dividends because their business model was to continually raise their prices. They published the schedule whereby they’d be asking the regulator (not sure if that’s the term) for price increases. They also published their 100% perfect track record for receiving them.

My guess is that’s the nature of the business. However, don’t expect relief from government attempts at regulation. The government likes to tell providers that they can’t do the things that are profitable, therefore the prices go even higher than they would have as there’s no money for infrastructure. Any attempt by the government to make the service free will simply raise prices for those who aren’t the government selected winners. (Hint, that won’t be anybody employed.)

Does Centurylink offer phone service in your area?

If so, they may also offer internet.

I have service from them. I’m in central Virginia and while Centurylink is not as fast as the Comcast internet we had when we lived a little further north of here, it is still quite good, and reliable.

Verizon Fios is good if your area company has fiber optics run. But I doubt it if it’s rural as you say. I live 45 minutes from NYC and I can’t get it. Only because my town has a sweetheart deal with the local cable company and have been stonewalling Verizon for years from running fibre optics. All towns around me have Verizon

I can't advise on N.C. ...however I've had fairly good results with At&t Internet service.

just Internet, if you bundle phone and tv and the service goes down you have ...Nothing...

separate them with different providers....

Good Luck lafroste !!!

I changed this month from TWC internet/tv cable and ATT landline phone to Verizon bundle with FIOS optic cable with internet/tv/and internet phone. The bundle is supposed to cost less and give me better speeds and qulaity plus I got some extra rewards for signing up.

Several minor glitches with the changeover including a bad cost estimate which Verizon adjusted—but the major thing was the internet speed which they publicize.

I found out after installation that the speed of 50MBps is there—but only with a wired lan direct hookup to their router/modem.

If you want to use a wireless setup for your home the speed will be less. I can’t completely rewire the house for obvious reasons.

If it’s offered in your area - ATT Uverse.

Land line (unlimited) and super-duper high speed internet (both hard wire and wireless) all installed and running smooth for < $50/month.

They will also bundle cell service and DirecTV if you need it. (I didn’t.)

If you have WOW
cable it is a good provider. I would not recommend AT&T DSL service if you are running Xbox as it is hard to get the upgrades over the DSL service versus cable without a lot of hassle

ATT is replacing all its DSL service.

What I referred to in my post (just before yours) is the new thingy. It’s super fast and handles tons of data.

And my rate went *down* when they installed it - which they did for free.

Telephone company. My rate has gone up $2 in the last eight years since I’ve had broadband service with them.

And no - I don’t have a phone line.

I have CenturyLink here in Colorado.

Their $49.99 monthly rate for 5 MB broadband service beats cable and throughput is consistent and reliable.

They used to be Qwest and my new CenturyLink modem is faster and better than the old Qwest modem that gave up the ghost.

I’m happy with them.

I have AT&T wireless, but I had to buy a microtower because the reception was so bad. And it runs on the internet. TWC charges me $58/month for 20 MBps, $48 monthly for 15 MBps, $38 for 8 MBps, and $15 for 2 MBps (of course that is the only price they advertise).

If AT&T Uverse is one of your choices AVOID it. Our service has been the worst of any I have ever subscribed to and the most expensive.

We are bundled with internet and of our 300 channels offered we watch about 7 or 8. 13 or so of the remainder are Spanish language, those continuous advertisement channels (Do I really need to buy anything from Time-Life after I’ve heard all the cuts from the Elvis Gospel Collection at least 20 times or watch Neil Sadaka age right before my eyes?)
After you get done with the on-demand come-ons, the fruity channels, the jewelry, the stair climbers, and the multi-variate CNN’s, CNBC’s, MSLSD,
and the rest you’ll find the pickings pretty slim and for all this we pay $162 a month.
We are pulling the plug on Uverse at the end of the billing cycle and going with Time-Warner where our bill will be less than half of Uverse with 70 stations and high speed internet.

About a year ago, I had ATT broadband service, and had to do some traveling, so I prepayed my account in advance for a few months. When I got home, I found I didn't have service, and that AT&T had disconnected me and had given the "last" customer node to another customer due to my lack of my bandwith use. Even though I paid months in advance

Needless to say, I exploded, and asked that they never never ever call here again for any reason.

DON'T USE AT&T!!!!!!!
