Ex-players react: Brady‘s cluelessness ‘unbelievable’

For more than a decade, Tom Brady has established himself as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time, one of the sport’s most popular and respected players. On Wednesday, Brady may have jeopardized his credibility for good.

Like Patriots coach Bill Belichick, Brady denied having anything to do with footballs being deflated in the AFC Championship Game and denied knowing it had occurred until the next day, but to the quarterback’s former peers, the NFL’s golden boy lost some of the luster he had earned in his 15-year career.

“I did not believe what Tom had to say,” former quarterback and ESPN analyst Mark Brunell said.

"This is common practice, and is done all around the league..."

And is the equivalent of driving 65 in a 55 zone - is it against the law? Technically, yes.
Why don't the Troopers pull over everyone exceeding 55? Because it's not really a big deal, and normally considered an acceptable practice.

Why is a big deal being made out of this, then?
Because the Colts forced the Official's hands on this and went public, and because a lot of NFL fans hate the Pats, and because it sells newspapers and air time.
Pagano is a whiner - that is the real story.

So - if the original rumor is based on 2lbs lighter than the 13.5 max psi - that means the balls were “under inflated to 12 lbs - not 10.

No one knows - ‘cause the NFL isn’t doing a damned thing to clear up what is rumor and what is not.

That list, is about the whole list of those arguing against...and you should have seen the dumbassery Brunell, Bettis, and Dawkins were spouting. Bettis especially, was simply casting aspersions with no idea what was being discussed.

Theisman, Marino, Doug Williams, and others are on the other side.

Someone did the actual math...

I took a shot at it in my post #60. Disclaimer: It was done before my usual two cups of morning coffee.

Armed robbery is a common practice too. Does that mean you don't punish it when you catch a perp?

Selective enforcement of its rules is one reason the NFL has a credibility problem.

If the NFL any former player or anyone else can prove Brady or Bellick is lying put it up. Other wise STFU.

Yeah - the rest of the league and coaches are all choir boys. I love the faux outrage.

Prior to this controversy - I thought that the Seamonkeys had the edge in the SB - now I will not be surprised when the Pats come into Phoenix and give them a world class thumping.

The Pats are gonna put a big ole exclamation point next to eveybody’s wishful “asterisk”.

FACT: Brady cheated

That is BIG news. I hadn't seen that yet. All I heard is that the balls were under the limit. I didn't know that, as a fact, it had been tied to Brady.

Which “It”? Use of unidentified pronouns has muddied the conversation almost as much as the completely contradictory reports.

The precedent penalty is...a reminder note. The Vikings, for example, we’re caught on camera heating balls during a cold game just this year. Aaron Rogers claimed in November that he pumps the balls up beyond the guidelines because he likes the ball even harder...and pretty strongly implies that those balls regularly make it through “inspection”.

Theisman personally experimented with ball inflations and said he can’t tell the difference in the range being discussed, as have others. Anything above 10 PSI is just plain hard.

No one on the field apparently noticed any difference when the Pats used the Colt ball in the firs half (per Colt LB), or when they used the balls inflated at half-time.

This not armed robbery - this is a parking violation.

Keep things in perspective.

Tom Brady was lying thru his teeth ... this is reminiscent of the bicyclist & Tour De France winner Lance Armstrong denying emphatically that he never did blood doping.

What really amuses me is all the “smart” commentators like Eric Bolling talking about a lighter ball as if PSI was a measure of weight.

Well, clearly there's only one solution to all this going forward.

The government's gonna have to step in and establish some football standards and oversight. Gonna have to have a federal government football apparatchik at all football games in charge of the footballs.

He, or she, will be armed with a pressure gauge and will check out a single football to the head coach only after he's signed for it. If he wants another football he's gotta bring the first one back, and if a ball goes into the stands or whatever there's gotta be an environmental impact report.

Same thing for college, high school, and little league.

Wow.

We get it. You don't like him.

I gather you're a fan of some team who they routinely beat, so we feel your pain.

Can anyone explain why the Patriots won 28-0 in the seond half when the balls were correctly inflated?

Must have cheated again.......

but I can tell when a basketball is underinflated immediately,

Yep. There it matters...and it matters when kicking the ball. For throwing, not so much. Theisman, for example did some experimenting and said he can’t tell. Sports Science calculated and tested and found that for the figures being bandied about, the lower inflation *might* have as much effect as slowing the ball by .003 seconds on a 20 yard pass thrown at 50 mph...which is pretty trivial and in the “wrong” direction.

Hell the guy who caught the interception noticed it right away.

Yeah...he denies that he noticed anything at all. According to him, he was just keeping a souvenir.

George Blanda played QB very effectively well into his 40s and he was no Brady. I’m a Romo fan, but deflated balls or not, Brady is the best in football and there are a LOT of jealous wanna-bes taking shots at him. Brunel never came close to a Super Bowl.

A lot of people talk about this issue and they do not have a clue about the issue. Early on, I heard some say they were going to “weigh” the footballs to determine if they were under inflated. Give me a break, these were supposed sports ‘experts.’ Now, they have finally got around to talking pressure, but again they know nothing about air pressure. Were the balls inflated with warm or hot air and then tested in a colder environment? Did they test the balls with the SAME pressure gauge used to inflate them? Did they lose any of the air pressure as they tested them? When you are testing a small quantity of air any loss in the quantity of air will have a major difference on the pressure. All these variables (and likely others) have to be taken into consideration. Bottom line: We will never know if there was any intentional malicious manipulation of the air pressure.

Did the refs check the Colts' balls?
The players balls were definitely deflated, I don't know about their footballs.

Yes, they tested the pressure of all the footballs being used or designated to be used in the game. Eleven of of the twelve balls designated game balls on the Patriots sideline were under inflated by (on average) two pounds. All twelve balls on the Colts side were found to be properly inflated.

...and those are hardly the only variables.

Using those same gas laws, filling the ball immediately before submitting will give much different results than if the balls were filled, then stuck in the hold of a bus, then filled again. Filling a ball warms the air...potentially a lot.

There’s also leather stretching from being wet, and changing the volume.

...and no idea when the measurements on the Colts balls were done - reporters have noted that they are unable to verify that.
