Bill Belichick claims ignorance of deflated footballs, throws controversy on Tom Brady
Yahoo Sports ^ | 1/22 | Dan Wetzel

Belichick addressed the controversy for the first time Thursday morning and made a number of strong and precise comments that, if he isn't telling the truth, can be fairly easily contradicted or even proven completely false. If that were to happen, his reputation would be finished.

Instead he claimed ignorance, threw the controversy onto quarterback Tom Brady – who always should have been at the center of this – and willingly and purposefully put himself in a box.

Belichick repeatedly mentioned he believes current and former players or staff members – or anyone else – will confirm what he said. He all but asked NFL investigators and the media to go ask them.

This suggests what Belichick said was honest. He's a smart man – extremely smart – and even his greatest critics will concede that. Only a fool would say what he said if his comments were so easily disproved. This strategy would run against every bit of lawyerly advice.

So he didn't come out and just say, "No explanation," for how the Patriots' footballs wound up underinflated in the first half of their rout of the Colts.

He said he never heard a word of this until Monday morning – not from officials, not from staffers, not from the media.

Better yet disband the NFL.

A Baseball pitcher is thrown out of the game right then if he doctored the ball and suspended at least 10 games.

A Golfer using illegal equipment is disqualified for that tournament and probably more penalties to come.

NFL probably do nothing but then again with all their criminals its par for the course.

Once a cheater, always a cheater.

Not necessarily. Some people do learn their lessons.

That said, I'm not a football fan but did catch the last ten minutes of the Seahawks game. Don't know why I turned on the TV, but a little voice in my head was saying, "I wonder what's happening." What a lot of football they crammed into those ten minutes. Hope they keep playing that way and CRUSH the Patriots.

These rotten cheating screwballs should be tossed from the Bowl, plain and simple. This is twice - New England couldn’t win by playing fair.>/I>

Sounds like the Gendings can't deal with getting thrashed? So if the League took the "in question" balls during half time what and N.E. had to use different balls excuse will the Gendings come up with for their sleeping thru the second half?

Better yet disband the NFL.

And behead the Patriots as that should then lessen their PDS.

Just watching Belichick say what he did displayed classic signs of lying.

1) Standing very still
2) Repeating words or phrases
3) Difficult for him to speak
4) Stare at you without blinking much
5) Looking down when he actually lying
6) Looking Up and to his left (this is only if he is right handed. It’s up to his right if he is left handed)

Just saying for a control freak like Belichick not to know anything about the football... Very hard to believe.

If the ball deflation gave the Pats enough of an advantage in the first half to get a big lead, do you think that changed the game plan of the Colts at all?

Get behind, and you must resort to high risk/high reward game play in order to make up ground. Defenses start going for picks and fumbles and not tackles. Offenses go for a higher percentage passing plays, which marks it easier for the other defense to read, etc.

So, a first half only advantage could cause the second half blowout.

They will be calling for PSI checks every time Brady throws a TD now.

Yeah, that was it. The Colts SUCK. The only player worth his salt is Luck.

You don't get two levels deep in the post season by "sucking".

Come up with something plausible that actually counters my argument.

What I am talking about can be seen in many games throughout the year. Teams that get behind make adjustments at halftime, play more aggressive to push for a momentum changing event. The aggressive play comes at a price at times.

It's only gets more pronounced in a win or go home situation.

Since the Patriots like playing with deflated footballs - in the Super Bowl make them play with ball that are completely deflated.

Fine, you’re right. The deflated balls were the very reason they won.

I said it was plausible that it had an effect on the game. You said it couldn’t and the Colts suck but still somehow got to the AFC Championship game.

That professor overestimates the effects of temperature change by about double. To get to the levels the NFL measured the temperature of the football would have had to drop from around 80 degrees F to below zero.

With a professor like that for a mouthpiece, I would ask for a tuition refund if my kids were enrolled at Boston University.
