Belichick addressed the controversy for the first time Thursday morning and made a number of strong and precise comments that, if he isn't telling the truth, can be fairly easily contradicted or even proven completely false. If that were to happen, his reputation would be finished.
Instead he claimed ignorance, threw the controversy onto quarterback Tom Brady who always should have been at the center of this and willingly and purposefully put himself in a box.
Belichick repeatedly mentioned he believes current and former players or staff members or anyone else will confirm what he said. He all but asked NFL investigators and the media to go ask them.
This suggests what Belichick said was honest. He's a smart man extremely smart and even his greatest critics will concede that. Only a fool would say what he said if his comments were so easily disproved. This strategy would run against every bit of lawyerly advice.
So he didn't come out and just say, "No explanation," for how the Patriots' footballs wound up underinflated in the first half of their rout of the Colts.
He said he never heard a word of this until Monday morning not from officials, not from staffers, not from the media.

At that time, both teams used the same balls and opposing quarterback Rich Gannon was in on the deal.
Yeah, because nobody like waxy slippery factory fresh footballs. Which makes me wonder did they both pony up $7500 or was that the total bribe? Either way that’s a pretty sweet payday for scuffing up 100 balls.
Maybe the Patriots shouldn’t have even made it to that game. If they were cheating the week before with the Ravens....., other teams.....???
It's possible, because of the confidence factor.
Suppose you were in a poker game, and you could give yourself, say, a ten whenever you needed it. That would make you more confident, more willing to take chances and stay in more pots. And you would win more pots.
Same kind of applies here. Of course, the Pats were the better team in the first place, so the effect is quite muddied.
Shoot, all you'd have to have is a pop-off valve set at 11 psi. Push it in,,,ffffftt....11 psi! Next.
Johnson says he does not remember the amount, but it was large. He also said he did not dun Gannon for his half. Yeah, the ball custodian made out pretty well considering it was probably a low-pay or no-pay job.
Football, even the NFL, used to have a lot more plain old fun in it!
Should be vacate all of Gaylord Perry's wins? And kick him out of The Baseball Hall of Fame?
All I know, that NFL is basking in the publicity. I have to laugh.
What BS
GO PATS!
This is so much ado about nothing. Do you guys and women even know the difference between 11 lb inflated vs. 13 lb inflated football?
Go Deflatriots! ;)
It is amazing what the last two demoncrap presidents have bestowed upon America as their legacy . . . how to face the camera and lie your tail off.
i hadn’t heard that the colts balls were tested. have you?
in any event, read this article, sounds like the ring of truth to me.
Ballghazi just getting better and better
Giggling and donning my asbestos suit now. I don't know what gets into me!
ROTFL! I'm going to use that!
True - but just for comparison I would bring up the game of golf. If a player is found to use non-conforming equipment, too many clubs, etc., they are disqualified. Doesn’t matter how many strokes they might be ahead.
Too bad other sports don’t strive for similar integrity
‘Dwayne Allen@Dallen83
@NFLonFOX not a story. They could have played with soap for balls and beat us. Simply the better team. We have to continue to build! #BTM’
