Paddle boarder Rich German, of Laguna Beach, Calif., heard tell of a pod of orcas in the area earlier this month and took to the waters himself in hopes of an encounter.
He got his wish, along with some incredible footage of a pod of five killer whales interacting with him.
"I always had this dream, and that was to see orcas," German said. The video below documents his dream come true.
I was suspicious when I saw it was an Oklahoma publication....
And you should be!!
LOL!!!
“Except in captivity!”
Yes, I forgot to mention that, they do got a bit crazy when we coop them up in a tiny tank.
I think I did hear them called that...there is a whale museum in Friday Harbor, it may have been there.
Been a dream of mine....
Don’t be taken in
by his welcome grin
he’s wonderin how you’ll fit
within his skin....
Never?
Sorry, that would scare the crap out of me.
There have been a few incidents, but when you look at them they all seem to be “unintentional”, and not deliberate attacks. For example, one orca grabbed a sack of seafood from a fisherman and just happened to drag the man under with him, or in another case, they think that orcas mistook some artic explorer’s barking dogs for seals and tried to knock them off the ice.
It really seems that, for whatever reason, they won’t hurt us except by accident.
Huh, very interesting. Not that I’m planning to try it, but it’s still interesting.
Yeah, it is interesting. They seem to be similar to dolphins in intelligence, and most animals at that level seem to show some “deference” to humans.
Take elephants for example, who are also very intelligent for animals. They have been known to help wounded or distressed humans in the wild, and have even buried human dead that they found exposed, so that scavengers wouldn’t eat the body. They are the only non-human mammal that has “funeral rituals”, which is itself interesting, but that they would perform them for us is truly thought provoking.
Interesting facts. Elephants will stomp humans, too, of course.
Yes, and they will do it intentionally, for a number of reasons. I’d feel much safer swimming with a wild orca than standing near a wild elephant, even those most elephants are normally gentle.
Orcas thinking...hello, lunch. Cool though.
Orca’s are dolphins - they are not whales.
I guess I can’t blame them...
See my post at #13...I think they do understand something about us in ways most other wild creatures don’t, and don’t eat us.
I have always wondered what we look like when they echolocate us...air sacs in the chest...not seals...hmm...
Well, yeah, but in the same way that sperm whales are scientifically dolphins. They’re not what people think of when you say “dolphin” though, in common parlance.
