Big layoffs planned at eBay [7% of the workforce]

Big layoffs are coming to eBay.

The company is planning to slash 2,400 workers across the eBay and PayPal parts of the business. The cuts will impact 7% of the workforce.

The layoffs will be made before the end of March. EBay said it was "simplifying organizational structures" in its quarterly earnings released Wednesday. A company spokesperson told CNNMoney that some of the cuts were to unfilled positions, but would not say how many.

With all the layoffs I've been reading about lately, the state controlled "media" must be telling the truth this time. Obama's economy IS BOOMIN'!!! All these layoffs also help explain why the Kenyan's approval rating is skyrocketing again. More and more Americans are going to be needing government handouts and free stuff.

Have to say I was a bit amazed to look up the number and find that eBay has 33,000 employees. I’ve been an eBay user for a long time but never realized how big they are.

In speaking with a friend who works for PayPal, I can confirm that they were very bloated with middle management and the streamlining is welcomed by many domestic technical workers.

However, this does not bode well for skilled labor in those markets, as many of the call centers are ramping up their offshoring efforts.

Not to defend Caliph Baraq, but both outfits have a lot of offshore employees, and the world economy makes the US look absolutely great.

This has NOTHING to do with the economy. This is all about the disruption that's happening in the payments business.

eBay is spinning off PayPal, and there are real questions about eBay's value proposition without it.

Also this is the year that mobile payments are really taking off, and Amex is caught flat-footed, facing disintermediation in the new mobile ecosystem.

Take Ebay back to what it was in 2005, and maybe they can get the sellers back.

I still sell, just not as much, and I’m extremely cautious. I also had to hike prices in order to cover all of their fees.

Don’t be fooled. This latest round of layoff’s is corporate politics; they are getting rid of the ones that are not in the new(er) inner circle post the long merger. The “layoffs” have next to nothing to do with true re-structuring or re-alignment; its just getting the non-yes men and women out of the way to make things easier for the higher ups to line their pockets.
