Here's Everything Microsoft Showed Today [Feature Highlights of Windows 10]
Business Insider ^ | 01/21/2015 | Matt Rosoff

Microsoft gathered a bunch of reporters together in its Redmond, Washington, headquarters Wednesday to show off the next version of Windows, Windows 10, which is expected to come out later this year.

You can check out our live blog of the event at the bottom of this page, but here were the highlights:

* Holograms. The coolest thing was a set of new products that will let people see holographic images. The hardware is called Microsoft HoloLens and looks a lot like Google Glass. There are also software tools within Windows 10 that will let programmers create apps that use holograms.

* Free upgrade: Windows 10 will be a free upgrade to anybody with Windows 7 or later, for one year. There was also a lot of talk about "Windows as a service," but that does not mean you'll pay for a subscription to Windows, like you do with Office 365. It just means Microsoft will push updates to the platform more frequently, and you'll get them in the background. That's not really new.

* Gaming: All Windows 10 devices will have an Xbox app that lets you connect to Xbox Live and play games against Xbox One users. You'll also be able to pause and record games, and stream them from an Xbox One to a Windows 10 device within your home.

* Mobile: This was probably the most lackluster part of the presentation. There will be a version of Windows 10 for smartphones, but it looks and feels a lot like Windows Phone, which has been around for four years. The goal, Microsoft says, is to create experiences that span different platforms. So, for example, you'll be able to start doing a task on your PC than transition to your phone.

Microsoft should have kept XP and made it available as a low-cost option for students and seniors.

Just to pick nits, but I am bothered by the bastardization of the language, such that everything that is by right 3D or Stereo is called holographic even though it has nothing to do with the traditional method of creating holograms by the interference of laser beams. They're trading an accurate description of the process for sexy marketing buzz.

Looks more like VR headset to a VR interface.

I’m not getting the “hologram” bit.

Is something visible, hanging in space, to people not wearing the headset?

Looks like you have to wear the headset. This is more like augmented reality than Virtual reality like the Rift which is totally immersive.

Like I said in my followup post, the hologram label sounds like marketing buzz, but check out the video - looks way cool.

Gimmicky? Maybe, but I've been following the Kinect for a while and there are a host of apps for it thanks to MSoft encouraging hardware and software hacks, same for the Occulus.

The way I see it, the new modalities will augment, not kill the keyboard and mouse. Personally, I think it may get a bit tiring waving my arms around all day.

It looks like my Windows phone, only it’s wide and shallow instead of narrow and deep.

The real question is can I copy my *.bat files and move them to different directories so I can save my star wars game before major battles?

XP is a 14 year old OS.

The only people using it are the cheap and the extremely stupid.

It’s like in 2001 wanting MS to support Windows 1.0, released back around 1987.

FYI, I am on a dialup 56K modem land line. I’ve never downloaded a MSFT update. Would take too long.

I run Avast! for antivirus and Kerio as a firewall. Shame about Kerio. Doesn’t run on any MSFT OS beyond XP. One of the finest firewalls ever. Was sold to another company who promptly proceeded to wreck it.

I also run Malwarebytes and ADW Cleaner on a regular basis.

A few, very few, viruses have gotten through but MWB and ADW have always been able to clean up the mess.

I think when the hackers, etc. see that I’m on an old fashioned dial-up line they leave me alone :)

There are some small appliance industry mfr’s sites that are incompatible with anything after XP, so your blanket “you’re an idiot for using XP” statement is both ignorant and insulting.

As for being safe: as long as it’s not online, it’s fine, and the only time it’s online is if it’s in contact with the base computer at the office or the mfrs in question. Difficult to hack into something that’s not online, no?

Meh. I’m still fine on my Win8 with Classic Shell. ($100 extra to have bought my laptop with Win7..)

I don’t really understand the constant need to put out new OS’s every year. It’s rather ridiculous.

FYI, I am on a dialup 56K modem land line. I’ve never downloaded a MSFT update. Would take too long.

I'm on Dial Up also and bought MiStake 8. The updates are killers up too 900MB a whack. Trying to stop it from backing up to CLOuD was also a major undertaking as it wanted to do 60mb plus chats with wherever.

MS 10 sounds like 8 to me. I don't want X BOX on my computer. If I wanted X Box I'd buy a machine. It seems MS Targeted buyers now are teenagers having parents buy them a computer and persons with portable Tablets, phones etc. I like control of my own files and storage thereof. I also like a desktop due to needing large font.

In short XP IMO was the best OS that Microsoft had developed for my use. It also looks like I'll have to start saving up for a computer at same point with an OS other than MiStake. MiStake Corp stopped listening to a sizable portion of the market. If you don't have high speed access MiStake now offers you nothing.

I'll have to give this all a couple of months absorption and then maybe see if he recommends me swapping 8.1 to 10.

I have been running Windows 10 technical preview 64 bit full bore (about 150 tabs, 20 documents, a multitude of apps) for months, using Classic Shell (should be standard) on it as well, and find it is hardly any different than W/8.1,with Classic Shell that is. Seems to use less ram, and is very stable.

Praise God for such tools.

But less interface customization than XP. See initial review FR thread here .
