Police are now able to build up a detailed picture of a suspect from the smallest speck of blood left at a crime scene thanks to an extraordinary DNA breakthrough.
New advances in the technology mean detectives will know if an offender is black or white, the colour of their hair and eyes, their height and age even if there are no witnesses to the crime.
Until now, investigators have only been able to match genetic material to records of criminals already in the national database, but the innovation will produce a 'DNA photofit' describing the offender.
Dr Denise Syndercombe-Court, a forensic genetics expert at King's College London, said: 'The new technologies raise the possibility that we won't need an actual eyewitness to a crime in order to produce a picture of how the suspect looks
'Instead, investigators will be able to generate a DNA photo detailing a suspect's characteristics, biological age and geographical ancestry.'
She said the value to police is 'enormous' in narrowing down the pool of suspects and eliminating the innocent. 'We are now in the moment of glimpsing a brilliant new future of DNA analysis,' she added.

I'm sorry that just can't be true. Everyone knows that race is just a skin color.
HA!...DNA is racist!!!!
Eye color and hair color are easily changed.
So is skin color, if you are willing to wear makeup.
Note to self: Try not to leave any DNA on next crime spree.
Won’t take long for the perp’s to figure out that all he needs to do is sprinkle a little blood from another race or hair color or height at the scene to through the cops off...
“Note to self: Try not to leave any DNA on next crime spree.”
While investigating stalkers I found that they frequently left genetic samples. They’d get so excited they’d masturbate. Some men who broke into houses to steal weren’t really there to steal, they were aroused and also left samples. (We’re not talking rocket scientists, obviously. They’d probably leave hydrazine.)
Now how is that affected by blood transfusions?
Don't laugh. A serial rape case in a Southern state had police baffled, looking for the reported white guy.
A DNA scientist offered to narrow down the field, and they gave him the unknown rapist sample along with 19 other known donors. He correctly ID'd the 19 known, going into the specifics, and said the unknown was a black guy, with proportional ancestry from where ever.
The police shifted to black guys in white pickups... and caught the alleged perp, complete with rape kit.
The [black] prosecutor was mixed about the use of DNA...
A less misogynistic prosecutor would have been thrilled to take the actual perp off the streets sooner, rather than later, and not waste police resources following the wrong description.
Most perps are perps because they aren’t all that bright to begin with.
They’ve been able to tell race for a long time. They just have been allowed to use it.
Name him, ping him...
No I’m laughing because some defense lawyer will claim checking DNA for race is “racist” and unfair and try to get it thrown out....
Mark my words.
Suspects usually make their victims bleed, not themselves.
so now every crook will know to bring a sample of someone else along to drop at the crime scene.
nothing is infallible. all this will do is allow others to set up other people if they are thinking evasively and planning something beforehand.
they will have a hell of a time determining that b/c there are no official or universal standards for a certain range of melanin must be a certain “color” of person. idiots.
this will also become a tool for govt to use to frame people by dropping a sample at a scene.
Can the test tell political affiliation?
