Ironically, this is one of the hallmarks of a primitive society. As described in Lawrence Keeley’s famous book, “War Before Civilization”, in prehistoric warfare two tribes would often meet and stand off a safe distance while individuals from either side called one another out to get or give up glory, often in the form of their head. You might wonder is modern warfare not more deadly compared to that. The answer Keeley provides is that a low average for male deaths by warfare in such societies is 60%, whereas in modern times it’s less than 2%.
