Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and given the context, it is an interesting moment to ask whether it really matters that the Motion Picture academy failed to nominate the black director and the black lead actor of Selma, the King biopic, for Oscars.
The Oakland Tribune went there and then some on Friday, topping its article about the awards with the headline, And the Oscar for the best Caucasian goes to ...
While the snubs may sting and point toward a broader blindness, its still more important in the long run that a young female black director received the backing of a Hollywood studio and made an important film. Long after the last blubbering actor has been played off the stage while thanking his or her makeup assistant at the Oscars, we will still have Selma.

Black people aren’t reproducing. Even including people who are 1/8 black, blacks will be irrelevant in another century.
The only way those left will be satisfied is if the current system of nomination and voting is changed to suit the agenda.
The way to do that would be to move all nominations and voting to a select committee supervised by the Academy and the committee is made up of left wing liberals using a quota system.
Then and only then will the actors and movies that most of America will never watch get the due they deserve.
ditto!
Is this just a cheap way to win Oscar for Best Picture ?
And how many whites will be awarded on the B.E.T awards?
Exactly zero and consistently, year after year.
I get it. They are about celebrating black entertainers.
Well, all the other award shows are for everyone regardless of race. That makes them more honest about achievement and they award the rainbow of colors.
Is there a quota you demand each year?
Selma was good but so were many other movies.
Selma should be nominated for more awards because of its timing and historical reference?
Well, 12 years a slave was also good, in fact, it was better.
The list this year is fairly representative of the number of good movies out there.
If you wanna bitch then screw with the 7,000 members of S.A.G & F.A.G.
They voted for the current list.
You might want to buy crap loads of stamps and start writing letters to each on complaining how you been done wrong.
Besides, you effing wankers, the actors ought to have at least been American and beneficiaries of MLK.
But no. Apparently Paula Patton was too smokin hot to play Coretta Scott King?
Carmen Ejogo is beautiful but, doesnt she run the risk of being typecast?
She already played Coretta in the film “Boycott” 2001.
And a good majority of her work is strictly race based. That’s everything from Eddie Murphy movies to Alex Cross. Sally Hemmings to Coretta King and Catherine Cookson’s Colour Blind.
Did I say she is from England? So Paula isn’t a choice but, Halle Berry couldn’t do this?
David Oyelowo? He’s British, in fact, I noticed a good many of the cast were British, and Trinidad counts too, having only gained its independence in my lifetime.
Oh, back to David Oyelowo. British? Was there some frickin achieved by hiring so many dang’d Limey’s?
That had to be racist in and of itself and frankly unAmerican.
David Oyelowo??? Let’s see how typecast he’s become Selma, 12 years a slave, Middle of Nowhere, A Raisin in the Sun, The Help, Red Tails....
So they played type and really aren’t going anywhere with their character.
Compare that to Denzel Washington and Halley Berry. Amazing talents that have played a wide variety of roles for which they have been awarded.
They are talented and play a wide variety of roles.
They aren’t thought of as black entertainers.
Heck men wish they looked as good as Denzel and want to sleep with Halle.
Women admire Halle for her accomplishments and find Denzel handsome.
No hyphenation needed or even thought of.
They appeal to everyone, not some thin slice of America.
You put either name on a movie and it will be seen.
Take a movie like “The Call”. It budgeted $13 million and was drubbed by the critics.
Halle took a paltry salary and big time deal points on the back. She laughed all the way to the bank when it scored $68 million in revenues.
Damned good investment and the movie was actually pretty good. I didn’t expect it to be.
These are American Entertainers who actually benefited from MLK and Oprah couldn’t get them? Couldn’t get Americans to play in her venture?
Sure, they would be effing expensive but, actors take on roles for nearly nothing all the time and yeah, they probably would not be good choices anyway, as their names would over ride the main characters.
So, Paula Patton and Michael Ealy??? They’re Americans and both excellent actors. One beautiful and the other quite handsome.
And why all they friggin British actors anyway? I mean, it was a lot and completely unnecessary.
This is an American story and should have been cast Americans.
I wonder why 7,000 members couldn’t nominate a bunch of grifters???
Hubby pointed out to me that American Sniper also has noms for Best Picture and Best Actor, but not for Best Director.
Plus, they are crushing it at the Box Office.
They should have separate categories for best Armenian, best Azerbaijani, best Georgian, and best Ossetian.
No, not while the race baiter in chief squats in the WH and Sharpton is de facto mayor of NYC with the president's ear. .
. To go with our affirmative action president.
13% of the population.
13.2 percent per recent census.
I asked a few young folk what they thought the percentage of the population was Black. I heard 30, 40, 45, and 50%. When I tell them 13.2 they are shocked.

Now they’re is complaining because racism is over
and they have to stand on their own merits.
I’m over it.
I’m looking forward to the ultimate Whitey movie coming later this year, “Black Mass” with Johnnie Depp.
I love it when lefties fight each other.
Guess now that a Dem is _resident they can’t make the issue some anti-Republican rant so this is what’s left.
There was some year in the late 70’s where virtually everything up for any award....was garbage. It was a full year of duds and I remember going to see several of the nominated movies....thinking that none of them would rank against movies of the 1960s.
How can putative “Selma” Oscar omissions matter when the Oscars themselves don’t matter?
Im suffering from black fatigue, just so damned over it.
Strange as it may seem, it matters not, to me.
Watch Selma now win best picture because of hollywood's sympathy that they left the blacks out when voting for their friends.... and Oprah's March this weekend? Just marketing for Best Picture. This is all as fake as Hollywood itself.
