Albuquerque zoo lemur dies after attack by another primate ( siamang )

One of the two lemurs attacked by another primate earlier this week at the Albuquerque zoo died Saturday.

The ABQ Bio Park said a 26-year-old siamang named Brian pried open some heavy-duty mesh that was separating its enclosure from the lemurs on Tuesday. Brian climbed in and attacked the two lemurs.

"Both received injuries to their tails and also bite wounds that required some suturing," said Debbie Wiese, the zoo’s primate supervisor.

...

The BioPark is now keeping the siamangs and lemurs in separate exhibits to avoid any future problems.

Siamangs are the primates of peace and have a long history of tolerance.

The zoo should arm the lemurs with Ruger Bearcats.

"He was just starting to turn his life around when ..."

Exactly. And no doubt the animal's mama will blurt out about how he was an honor roll student also.

Siamangs are basically giant gibbons.

I wouldn't mess with one.

The lemurs asked for it, verbally abusing Brian. I am sick of bullying so when Brian snapped, the lemurs got what they deserved for their years of verbal abuse. NO LEMURS KNOW PEACE!

It’s a siamang-eat-lemur world out there.

Wonder how many zoo staff it took to stop the attack?

They probably used a tranquilizer gun, I'm thinking. I just know I would never get into a cage that housed an ape, even a smaller one such as a gibbon.

All are astonishingly strong, and all bite!
