More room for chickens likely means costlier eggs

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — The new year is expected to bring rising chicken egg prices across the U.S. as California starts requiring farmers to house hens in cages with enough space to move around and stretch their wings.

The new standard backed by animal rights advocates has drawn ire nationwide because farmers in Iowa, Ohio and other states who sell eggs in California have to abide by the same requirements.

To comply, farmers have to put fewer hens into each cage or invest in revamped henhouses, passing along the expense to consumers shopping at grocery stores. California is the nation's largest consumer of eggs and imports about one-third of its supply.

"stretch their wings"...

Everything thing that liberals do ends up costing everyone more money.

>>Everything thing that liberals do ends up costing everyone more money.<<

And, while an irritation for the middle class and higher (even the lower middle class), it inevitably hurts the poor the most.

Higher prices on staple items is the most regressive tax of all!

Would you like to spend your life in a cage where there isn't even enough room for you to turn around or spread your arms? Chickens in these hideous cages have already had their beaks cut off to prevent aggression under the unnatural conditions, since in a normal environment chickens settle out who's the top in the pecking order by challenging one another. At least let them have enough space to turn around and spread their wings.

As soon as cage free eggs became available, that's the only thing that I put into my grocery cart. I bet they are of higher nutritional quality, too, because the hens are much less stressed.

People are willing to spend money on cigarettes, dope, alcohol, prostitutes, stupid movies, etc., yet squawk at a few pennies more to be humane to G-d's creatures.

I am most decidedly NOT a liberal, but I cannot abide by animal cruelty in any form.

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

Less cruelty in the way we produce our food is alright with me.

People can make choices to substitute other proteins if it is too expensive.

***The new standard backed by animal rights advocates ...***

As usual. A standard thought up by people who never raised a chicken or egg in their lives.

Now they propose to tell professional egg farmers how to do their jobs.

Why don’t chicken farmers build separate chicken houses for California standards and make California pay for customized processing?

Otherwise, it seems like chicken farmers are seizing the opportunity to pass along increased prices to everybody on this issue.

Embargo eggs from other states from entering California - they shall be compelled to rely entirely on eggs produced only from within that state.

California has no problem whatsoever is keeping milk from other states from entering California, to be sold in supermarkets. All California fluid market milk must be processed only according to the state agricultural department regulations, all other from other states must be converted into processed products (cheese or butter, or other processed foods).

In fact, California has a whole slew of regulatory controls over many aspects of agriculture that exist nowhere else in the US, including limitations or exclusions of citrus, fresh produce, and certain other “unsustainable” agricultural products.

Most of which were written by somebody who has little real business experience in actually operating a farm or ranch.

Actually it’s not worth eating the eggs that are created by these factory systems. You think its about a penny or a dollar but you’re ingesting garbage with few nutrients and not much value.

We’re better off in this law. We’re better off if it makes all of us put a few hens in our back yards and get more self sufficient. This is what liberty is...the ability to take care of ourselves.

EVERYTHING that makes us more self sufficient is a GREAT OUTCOME.

I don’t support the BIG GOVERNMENT LAWS but I do support the outcome.

All government isn’t bad, but the more of these regulations we incur is only going to drive us to rely on our own back yards more and more and that isn’t a bad thing.

I am not a liberal, either, and I greatly prefer cage-free eggs. Even better if they come from a small local farmer with old-fashioned chicken roosts.

Of course, animal cruelty should be a concern to all Americans, but for me, the real issue is taste. Free range eggs taste better.

Like you, I suspect it has a great deal to do with the way the chickens are raised.

Yep, they're a bit more expensive, and they are worth every penny.

I have never heard nor read that eggs produced by chicken farms are less nutritious than those in backyard pens or the like.

Link?

This is a moral question. Do we really want to grow our meat without moral consideration to the animals we raise?

There is a couple of verses in the Torah that indicates God does want us to consider an animal’s welfare, even though we are raising it for the purpose of eating it.

Look up the verses about not cooking the calf in milk in the presence of its mother.

People who know me say that I am to the right of Atilla The Hun. Mebbe, mebbe not, but this YouTube got to me - especially when you see the affected people downwind and way the pigs are corralled.

You are claiming that production eggs are “garbage” and don’t have protein or food value as eggs??

Based on what?

A search on Zillow.com yields up some high end chicken coops.

The one pictured below is in move-in condition and chickens will enjoy this gracious home with large formal rooms flowing into casual living areas with every amenity that chickens could want. The grounds (2 1/2 acres) are manicured and spectacular with multiple patios, in ground pool, plantings and sweeping lawns. The main entryway features floor to ceiling windows with cathedral ceilings throughout the space.

Open concept. Top of the line kitchen with lush egg-laying beds throughout. 4 1/2 baths including luxury master suite for the rooster. 4 other bedrms, all new windows, exercise room, office ,3 fireplaces, finished walk out lower level with walkout to the backyard.

Built in 1995, rebuilt in 2013. At an asking price of just $74,900, this exquisite property will fly the coop fast so call for appt. now.

Perhaps you have bought into the PETA propaganda which says all species are equal.

They are food and produce food for our consumption.

If they were so stressed, why hadn't they died from their torturous confinement years ago?

Anyway, Happy New Year.
