HAYDEN, Idaho—Employees evacuated the Hayden Walmart on Tuesday following a shooting inside the store.

Authorities on the scene around 11:15 a.m. described the shooting as "accidental."

A woman was shopping with four kids, when one of the kids reached into her purse and accidentally discharged the weapon, according to Kootenai County Sheriff's Deputies at the scene.

The gunshot killed the 29-year-old woman. Deputies on scene said the child who accidentally fired the handgun was about 2-years-old.

Deputies said the woman and children were in the back of the store near the electronics area when it happened. Deputies said the woman was in town for holidays and is not from the area.

Video surveillance in the store, along with eye witness testimony helped deputies determine that this was an accident.

Authorities said the woman did have a concealed weapons permit.

The store is currently closed.

It’s not just the grip, but finger strength and size of the hand.

Deputies said they believe the two-year-old reached into his mother’s purse and grabbed a handgun, which then went off and fatally shot her, NBC station KHQ reported.

Idaho lawmakers passed legislation earlier this year allowing concealed weapons on the state’s public college and university campuses.

Despite facing opposition from all eight of the state’s university college presidents, lawmakers sided with gun rights advocates who said the law would better uphold the Second Amendment.

This is the only news report where they report that the baby pulled the trigger rather than the “gun went off”:

“Lt. Stu Miller of the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office said that the boy was sitting in the shopping cart when pulled the handgun from his mom’s purse and pulled the trigger. Police identified the victim as Veronica J. Rutledge, 29, of Blackfoot, Idaho.”

Glock, probably. I usually stay at Condition 3, not 4, with a Glock. Only takes a quick rack to make it Condition 4.

Me too.

Are Glock’s actually cocked before the trigger is pulled halfway?

The act of pulling back the slide to chamber a round, cocks the Glock. There is no way to have a live round in the chamber without the Glock being cocked.

This is why you should NEVER EVER carry a Glock in your pocket or purse without a proper holster shielding the trigger -- if the trigger is hit, the gun will fire.

The locally run AP (Administration Propaganda) version does the same.

There is only one gun safety.

It's between the ears of the owner.

there is a place for semi-autos and a place for revolvers. Very few accidental discharges for revolvers compared to semis. Revolvers are just as deadly but much safer and reliable.

The Glock "safety" is actually on the trigger (which is to say it is not a safety at all).

Only ONE of the THREE Glock safeties is on the trigger.

Aren’t most revolvers double action only?

Yes but considerable trigger pull is required compared to a semi. I have always said and still believe a shooters first handgun should be a revolver. Lots of discipline is needed for a semi along with much needed range time.

Don’t quite know what you mean by double action only.Double action can be used both ways, single or double unless it is hammer-less.

Good thought. I know nothing about toddlers so I don’t know the approximate age when they get motor skills. But still, if you have a gun in your purse, it better be zipped up and out of reach of children. And the woman was a nuclear scientist. Very sad for her family.

The child who blinded his grandmother’s eye is still too young. He doesn’t remember or know that that is what happened. The family has decided never to tell him. I think that’s fine - I’m not sure even at 30 you’d want to hear you did that, but if he finds out at 30, with grandma long gone. He should be ok. Grandma had a job and drove to it; she was forced to retire and can’t drive. But two year olds are mobile little babies and can’t be responsible for anything, this mother caused her own death, as sad as it is.

Always keep your firearm away from unauthorized users.

A tragedy that could have been avoided by simple firearm safety.

Very disappointed in many of these posts. The authority in which they judge based on their lack of knowledge of firearm carry takes one’s breath away.

I’m thinking Hayden Idaho is a pretty safe hamlet. Is there a reason to carry a gun in ones purse without the safety engaged?
