Nuclear power plants should be set up to power refineries to convert water, NG and coal into liquid fuels.

I remember a FR post about a rain storm in Houston, and all the electric cars were shut down.

No. I don’t believe in alone in stating that Freepers do NOT take delight in anything negative about them...

...just ANYTHING in which we have been “blown smoke up our skirts”.

Frankly, I take more offense at your condescending statement than gubmint lies.

I am personally scared of the battery. My personal bias is more toward propane in the vehicle than a liquid fuel or a massive battery with corrosive, or just plain reactive alkaline chemicals in it.

Personally, I think they overstate the power delivered, the rechargeable longevity, and the replacement costs. Frozen climates, extremely hot and humid climates, salt and sea air.....not much experienced history that can be tracked here.

I’m sure there are other undiscovered costs associated with disposing of useless packs, also. Right now, this is all just another peg in the socialist takeover of this country, IMO.

>>What do you think of nuclear power?

I was a Submarine Nuclear Propulsion Plant Electrical Operator/Supervisor in the Navy. I think that every town in America should have a nuclear power plant (or more than one). I think they should all be built to a common standard with common training for all plant personnel. The Navy should be the model for civilian nuclear power because you can’t argue with success.

If you only account for the engine, then electric is more efficient on basis of fewer energy conversions from the electric motor. If you include the power plant, or the source of electricity, compared to the petrol, then there is far less of a gap in energy efficiency, because there are comparable numbers of energy conversions. I just don’t like a large laptop battery, which you should not break open, or liquid fuel which burns for a long time. Gas fuels rise and disperse, and burn off fast in a leak, meaning you get exposed to way less heat if a CNG car breaks and leaks.

Yes, if you subcategorize efficiencies there are comparable performances in some instances. But real life and what it takes to get to that point to be able to parse comparisons based on some outcome desired doesn’t work that way.

Life cycle, from beginning to end is a comparison that doesn’t equate in the least, IMO.

As a note, having an additional heater for your car, or a heated garage are common extra costs for running an EV. But for someone with the money to buy an EV, they usually are not a big deal.

“Burning coal to power homes and business: GOOD.
Burning coal to replace clean-burning, efficient modern internal combustion engines: BAD.”

Why is that?

I have an electric/hybrid car. My utility company uses coal. For a $0.60 charge, I get 20 miles electric before the hybrid ICE kicks in. Even at two dollars/gal for gas, that’s a 40% savings on fuel use. At higher gas prices, using coal to power my car is a bargain.

Why is that bad?

Seriously. I don’t subscribe to the green religion. It bothers me in the least that coal powers my electricity. Why shouldn’t I use the free market of energy available to me to capture the best price for the energy I use.

You are in effect telling me that it’s OK for you to make a value judgment about my use of legal product that I pay to use. More to the point, you are suggesting that I must pay a premium (by using gas only) to justify your position. Otherwise, I’m being “bad”.

How is that any different than environazis telling you that coal is bad altogether?

I think we can agree that the picture gets messier when you get beyond the ideal electric motor performance, correct?

Yes, those seem like other considerations. At my age, there is a very likely chance I’d never have to consider it because of several factors. The only “electric” vehicle I might have to have is a golf cart to move around the old fart’s community. :0)

Everyone be careful with articles like this. For some reason Freepers take delight in anything negative about electric cars, but make no mistake, this is really a leftist attack on coal. Don’t fall for it.

Remind me... Which political party pushes electric vehicles?

Why don’t you take your “progressive” BS back to DU and KOS?

Oddly enough, many of those pushing the glorified golf carts also shilled for Mitch McConnell and the rest of the RINO Surrender-crats.

And that’s exactly the reason why I would want a future hybrid car. It pays to rely on more than just gas.

I am interested in having my next car be a hybrid, but not for the reasons the environazis bring up. FWIW, a hybrid helps when you are stuck in traffic to reduce wasted fuel by turning over to electric, is one of them. I think overall that it is good to realize that all types of cars have pros and cons, and discuss them.

Yes, an electric motor is very efficient on its face.

I just think that the appurtenances and needs to get it to that state are overlooked because of the novelty of it and being ‘en vogue’ in a smug, tree-hugging sort of way.

Which hybrid/electric car do you have? I’m talking about the all-electric cars, which is the greenie dream car.

How many years do you have to own this car to capitalize the extra cost of the car through your 40% savings on the first 20 miles of your journey each day?

I have a Ford Fusion Energi electric /ICE hybrid. The other day, some Prius driver parked next to me and gave me a dirty look. My car is what his car wants to be when it grows up.

That might be a tad smug of me, but I thoroughly enjoyed the dirty look from the greenie.

To get rid of electric cars, no amount of factual information on thermodynamics will alter the course.

To be perfectly honest, I’m not concerned with “getting rid of electric cars.” I love innovation. I just don’t want my tax dollars handed over to con artists and “social engineers” who want to destroy our way of life.
