As millions of moviegoers sit down in front of the same few studio films playing at their local theater over the holidays, the handful of Hollywood creators behind those projects will have that still-rare power: the undivided attention of much of the country. In communities of all kinds, audiences young and old, of various backgrounds, will gather to consume the artistic vision of a select few people.
In this way, a single film, whether its transporting millions to different worlds, pushing them to explore the depths of their own feelings, or imagining the assassination of a world leader, can still have an enormous influence on culture. The ability to keep our attention in a dark theater for two hours or so means films can teach people things, often without them knowing.

They have “Blackula,” “Superfly” and “Shaft.” What else do they need?
Morgan Freeman, routinely playing God in movies if not savior of humanity in “Oblivion” and President in “Deep Impact”.

It might come up short.
And on and on...
I haven’t heard her. Review was LA Times. Not the kind of movie I’m looking for. May watch on cable for the music.
It’s significant because Hollywood only rarely creates interesting, relatable black characters that appeal to the mass audience; instead they’d rather take iconic figures from popular culture and put them in blackface.
Ugh. Just read the “article”. Except it’s not really an article, it’s simply checking names on a scorecard. A low point in The Atlantic’s long history.
Won’t the curly red hair look weird?
