Study reveals cops are the most obese workers in America
The Daily Mail ^ | Dec. 17, 2014 | Tim MacFarlan

• Along with firefighters and security guards, nearly 41% of police are obese
• Findings published in American Journal of Preventive Medicine study
• Slimmest workers are economists, scientists and psychologists

Their job is to protect and serve – but it seems some police officers interpret this as an excuse to enjoy too many extra servings at the lunch table.

A study has revealed US cops have the highest rates of obesity among any profession in the country.

Along with firefighters and security guards, nearly 41 per cent of boys in blue are obese, according to a study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

This analysis (one hesitates to call the mere assembly of statistics a “study”) is based on reports of BMI, a height/weight comparison that regularly reports the most muscular athletes and entertainers as “obese.” The police officers and firemen I see working out in our county fitness facility are not fat, but their BMI might report that way, even though their weight is muscle.

It is possible that obesity is a significant problem among police forces, but these stats don’t prove it.

I think this is hooey, because they are using the Body Mass Index (BMI) as their basis. If you are a tall person with an Arnold body, you will register as “obese” even if your body fat is minimal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_mass_index#Limitations_and_shortcomings

“Mathematician Keith Devlin and the restaurant industry association Center for Consumer Freedom argue that the error in the BMI is significant and so pervasive that it is not generally useful in evaluation of health. University of Chicago political science professor Eric Oliver says BMI is a convenient but inaccurate measure of weight, forced onto the populace, and should be revised.”

I live in a smaller town in TX. The local cops look way younger and fitter (more fit) than those in the pic above. 41% seems very high from what I see. But, then again most of the cops I see are out and about. Not just sitting in front of a phone and PC all day.

Unfit for battle: America’s military is growing tired, injured and overweight

By Thomas E. RicksThomas E. Ricks covered the U.S. military for the Washington Post from 2000 through 2008.

In 2010 the national security organization Mission: Readiness grabbed headlines with a report stating that obesity and other weight-related health conditions were the reason why nearly one-third of American youth were ineligible for military service. Titled “Too Fat to Fight,” the report concluded that if American schools did not reform diet and exercise programs, the diminished pool of recruits might constitute a national security crisis. Though Mission: Readiness released a follow-up report in 2012, changes in American schools have been slow and sporadic, and the growth of obesity in Americans continues apace. During that time, the American military has had to recruit from the available population while facing other extraordinary challenges: continued operations in Afghanistan and the Horn of Africa even as new conflicts develop in Europe and the Middle East, fiscal austerity and emerging threats in west Africa and Asia.

“I don’t know where that is supposed to fit into the discussion?”

Because you asked about military members obesity.

“What about MPs and all the various military cops, are they fat?”

Not VA, no. I live in So Cal. I think the police are fairly fit around here, too. The city pool is across the parking lot from the police station and quite a few cops do laps at lunch time.

The firefighters one surprises me.

My buddy’s SIL is a ff/paramedic and when we visited the station they’re all into running triathlons and look totally buff.

They have to pass this running/climbing test with all the gear on every 6 months or so, it looked pretty tough.
