'The Interview' NYC Premiere Canceled After to Terrorist Threats
Entertainment Tonight ^ | 12/17/2014 | Jackie Willis

Fans of Seth Rogen and James Franco are going to have a harder time seeing the guys' latest funny film, The Interview, as several movie theaters are refusing to play the movie.

The Thursday premiere of The Interview at New York City's Landmark Theater was canceled after threats alluding to attacks of 9/11 were made by hackers responsible for the leaks of private Sony documents.

Rogen and Franco's new comedy is about two journalists who set out to assassinate the North Korean president, and since the recent promotion of the movie, Sony Pictures has faced tremendous pressure to pull the film from theaters.

The hackers, who call themselves the Guardians of Peace, have threatened to attack several cinemas if the film is shown. "Remember the 11th of September 2001," the hacker group said in a message posted Tuesday. "We recommend you to keep yourself distant from the places at that time."

The statement continues with even more threats, "If your house is nearby, you'd better leave. Whatever comes in the coming days is called by the greed of Sony Pictures Entertainment."

Carmike Cinemas, which operates 278 venues across the country, has canceled screenings of the comedy, but Sony is not objecting and is pledging full support if other theaters follow suit. "If they play it, we'll show it," said Tom Stephenson, CEO of Look Cinemas (via BBC News). "Sony has a right to make the movie, we have a right to play it and censorship in general is a bad thing."

This always struck me as a stupid idea for a movie. Not because we should be afraid of the Norks, because it’s a stupid idea for a movie. I wonder who greenlighted it?

I seriously doubt NK had anything to do with it.

Do you doubt that they have the *ability* or the *inclination* to do it?

Regarding ability...do you *really* think that the Chinese,Russians,Iranians and North Koreans have no desire to bring the West to its knees through the use of hackers?

Regarding inclination...tell us everything you know about the North Korean state. Then we'll talk.

Nowadays.

I doubt they have the ability. The Chinese probably do, but what's the point of attacking Sony Pictures? All they get out of it is bravado, and it doesn't impress me.

See above. A cyber attack on Sony Pictures just makes Sony look like they are incompetent. The US can survive without them, and might even do better without them.

How do we know SONY didn’t make this faux threat to rouse public curiosity?

I had the same thought. But such a conspiracy would involve many people, and would be difficult to keep secret. I don't know the wording, but its also possibly illegal to make public threats about harming people, terrorist attacks, etc...Very dangerous to Sony if found out to be a hoax

If I were a cynical movie exec, I would roll with it. Publicly "Stand up" to the blackmailers, let them issue counter threats, do all the talk shows, hype the media, keep it going as long as possible. If North Korea really wants to attack the USA over it, well that's the politicians' problem. Watch the publicity and $$$ roll in!!!

If Kim Um is running his country the way he wants, then his people have no idea what movies are out right now or that Hollywood even exists.

If the Chinese have the ability (and you can bet they do) then their good pals and allies in NK have it too.As for what's accomplished...it embarrasses Sony for their filthy slander against Dear Leader III and, much more importantly,it informs ordinary citizens of civilized industrial nations (and reminds the leaders of those nations) of just what they're capable of doing.
