What is it going to take for people to realize the New York case is BECAUSE of DeBlasio who ordered a crackdown on selling UNTAXED cigarettes because the city was losing $1.60 a pack in revenue? This death was a result of that crackdown. But he is allowed to pontificate without being hit by any political tomatoes. Amazing.

Vilhelm is certainly responsible for the the high taxes on cigarettes. but it was the citizen merchants who didn't want fatso selling in front of their stores.

I think the tax in NY is $4.25 a pack,not $1.60.

The cigarette tax may be too high, but “untaxed” goods have no taxes because they are either stolen or smuggled, usually by the Mafia or a terrorist group, and then resold to people like Garner (who was apparently a biggie in the local stolen cigarettes ring), who then sell them in front of immigrant-run (usually Indian) shops where the owner has actually paid the taxes and bought the ciggies legally ...or often these stolen cigarette vendors force the convenience store to buy from them at the risk of having their business trashed.
The Mafia does this with all sorts of products, stealing truckloads of everything from cigarettes to gasoline.
The tax rate is a separate issue.
