A divergence in African American culture has made it easy for people to categorize "good" and "bad" blacks separately—and that's a huge problem
My parents sent me to an all-white elementary school when I was 4. I speak and think differently than them because of it. This is a small, common tragedy of black life that we don’t talk about: the best way for me to find success in my own country was to be immersed in a culture entirely different from my parents’ and adopt it as my own. But that experience taught me lessons that I now find intuitive–how to find common ground with different people, how to come off as non-threatening to others, how to chalk up racist statements to a misunderstanding. You could probably label me clean and articulate, like my President.
There are a lot of black people like me now who grew up straddling two different racial worlds. Blackish, the only comedy on broadcast TV featuring a prominent African American cast, is centered on this increasingly prevalent concept of black identity. I don’t want to paint my experience as some painful upbringing. I had a big, loving family and, eventually, great friends of all races. But I fear some people are learning the wrong lessons when they meet black people like me–that I am somehow more acceptable or less problematic than other black folks. That Mike Brown, Eric Garner and Trayvon Martin should have behaved exactly like me to avoid being killed.

Thug is an excellent word and accurate.... Tough if they don’t like it. The solution for blacks is to stop rooting for the thugs among you and stop enabling them. But I know you wil refusre to do this because too many blame “The Man”, you blame whitey for all your problems
Time to take responsibly for your community *(a word that Al Sharpton and his clones use ostentatiously) to stop silently cheering your thugs on for “sticking it to The Man. Pathetic!!!
I was surprised that South Korea has a lower birthrate than Japan. Surprised because Korea is more brashly dynamic as far as what I see them exporting in automobiles and electronics. Thus I figured had a higher birthrate .

If one black man is given a race-based exemption from accountability, all blacks are dishonored.
I'm tired of these idiots using others to hide behind. All black people are not the same. All whites are not the same, all hispanics, asians, & so on and so on are not the same.

Back during the ‘00 demonstrations at the VP Mansion, some union THUGS, all white, came to get in the faces of the “pro-Cheney” people. Never called them anything BUT thugs. Does anyone automatically think thug = black?

Unless they lived in a different country, your parents' culture was not "entirely different" from the one you lived in. Did they speak an African language? Lots of different customs in the US, but such differences don't add up to a different culture, espcially for blacks who descend from slaves and families who been in the US for a a couple of centuries or longer.
Lots of hyperbole used to try and draw a conclusion that really doesn't follow.

So because black men and boys who behave badly are products of what is arguably a bad culture, authorities should excuse their bad behavior, rather than risk lumping all blacks together in the culture of bad behavior? This is why blacks can’t admit that bad behaving blacks kill far more blacks than cops ever will. They don’t want to judge what is bad, black culture, and they don’t want bad blacks to be held responsible for what they do, because they grew up in that bad culture.
What about all the blacks who don’t grow up in suburbia and who don’t become criminals? Should they too be lumped with the blacks who do become criminals?
Blacks in this country have been making excuses for their bad behavior for so long, they have nowhere left to take their argument but to an absurd claim that blacks should be exempt from laws and reasonable behavior.

If you can't tell them apart from their music, dress and general behavior, that's the rational human thing to do!
He doesn't know it, but he is right. If you come across as threatening, you are threatening. Brown, Garner, and Martin should have behaved themselves and not acted threatening. When you try to take a cop's gun, you are a thug. When you pound someone's head against concrete, you are a thug. The key seconds of the Garner encounter, just before the choke hold, were removed from the video (and I don't know if the hold was appropriate), but fighting the police was a bad idea. If those three had not tried so hard to be threatening thugs, they would be alive.
The funny thing to me is that most thugs I have met were white. The first thugs to threaten me, union goons, were both white. When I think "thug", the first image in my head is those big, tattooed, beer-bellied, muscular, long-haired and bearded goons (and I hope they died a slow and painful death, preferably young, childless, and alone), not a black thug. My view of black thugs is the same as my view of all thugs - the world is better without them - but it has nothing to do with race and everything to do with evil.

So it is racist to try to determine the character of a black person, we should assume that all black people are the same?
It seems to me that this is just the opposite of what civil rights leaders have died for in the past.
