During the Israeli War of Independence some guy there developed a home made mortar. During that war, not many, if any, in the West wouldn't sell the Israelis ammo - so they imported brass lipstick casings and made their own.
When your back is against the wall, you can get pretty inventive. Sorta like Samuel Johnson's quip “. . . when a man knows he is to be hanged in a fortnight, it concentrates his mind wonderfully.”
