My wife and I have had Goldens Retreivers for the last 20 years. We are in our late 70's and recently had to euthanize our 11yo Lady Golden. We still have a 12 yo male Golden and two adopted older cats. All of our pets are rescued or adopted.
We live in Indiana and RV travel about 4 months of the year. We are looking to downsize our Pet Family in physical size not quantity. What can our FReeper Friends suggest for our next small sized Dog (10 lbs or so).
I apologize in advance, but I can only recommend the noble, loyal and highly intelligent German Shepherd, because there is simply no other dog.
They also usually weigh in just over 10 lbs, so should be a perfect fit!
Keep in mind that the smaller the dog, the lesser amount of time you can leave it alone. We have friends who RV with their two Yorkies and if they’re away from the RV for more than two hours, they’ll come back to puddles on the floor.
My daughter has a Morky....Maltese/Yorkie. She looks like a Yorkie, but has the more friendly, less intense personality of a Maltese. She’s a great alert dog, but not serial barker, and she loves everybody. She’s only 5 pounds. Great little sweet doggie!
Pomeranian.
We have our 2nd and 3rd ones now. All three have been great dogs. Very smart, very aware, very loving. Nothing can sneak up on us either.
Go to the Rescue Center and let your heart direct you to the dog! I personally have my little Chuhahua/Terrier mix because he followed me home on my run 3 1/2 years ago. He then sat outside my front door and I relented after an hour and gave him some water. The rest is History and Buddy is a loving family member today! Oh, and he loves to run fast, so I think he picked me because I was running! HA!
LOL. SOP for that breed.
We're big dog people, so I'm guessing my suggestions would not be of much use.

Well, I just got nipped by the neighbor’s chihuahua, last night, so I would say, cross that off of your list!
I disagree. If you are the unlucky neighbor of a beagle owner, the howling is the bigger issue. Been through that. You can hear them half a block away when they're in the garage. You can't train it out of them. It's their nature.

Had a minature poodle (silver) for 18 years, got him at 6 months, never made a mistake in the house, never chewed anything, no attitude, just a loving sweet companion that would not leave my side. He was special!
oh my gosh! I’m sorry about the loss of your dog; so sad. BUT......I am very glad to hear you’re ready for another one. I strongly recommend the humane society and animal control as you will find exactly what you’re looking for!!!
Please consider doing that. The dog will come spayed or neutered, wormed, all shots and ready to go.

Thats a big part of the problem. Beagles are decidedly pack animals in nature. And dogs are pack animals to begin with, beagles just take it to a different level. Combine with their stubborness, and you get a dog that will be very vocal with any/all grieviences.
Relegating them to a garage, or a backyard or anywhere they’re separated from the human component of their pack when they don’t want to be, and they’ll howl. Treat them like lapdogs, spoil them a bit (but not to excess) but keep them close and be responsive to them and the howling goes away.
.....me again. No offense to anyone here but, don’t buy a full blooded dog. When there’s human intervention in breeding you see all kinds of issues with health and/or behavior.
Please also consider a larger dog as most apartments/condos ban them so the shelters are full of larger dogs.
Lastly, I have pit bulls. They are sweet, smart and protective. And, of course, the shelters are full of them.
Remember - dogs are individuals and do not necessarily conform to the breed standard.
My German Shepherd never barks, is usually well-behaved and housebroken.
Get another Golden. I know they are 75 pounds, but they think they are 10 pounds and that is good enough for me.
Love my Golden.
