Dear FRiends, I need to replace my dishwasher. Would you recommend hiring a handy man do the job or getting it installed by the home store that I'd buy it from? Thank you all very much in advance for your valuable advice. Newb
I have a shop full of tools and tool boxes from welders to chain saws to plumbing tools to automotive and I used to do everything. I no longer enjoy working in contortionist positions like you may need to do under the sink, dealing with counter heights, drain line, garbage disposal adapters, etc..
These types of one off jobs for you, (not the pros) often take more time than you ever expect.. As others have said the pros will get in and out and take the old unit along, and if something goes wrong you are not in the middle..
Have the store arrange for install. My 2 cents.
dishwasher replacement ping- amusing replies
That would be a great selling point for divorce lawyers.
usually the home store guys who deliver it, install it.
I just had a new one installed. The appliance store delivered and installed it for $75 and they were 30 miles out. I did this a couple of times but when it comes to plumbing I leave it to the pros. Money well spent.
Owwww! You better duck and cover after that one!
If you know & trust a handyman/plumber, the install might be a little cheaper than the home store contractor. But an unknown installer could screw you & you have no recourse - he’s gone with your money.
A store contractor has a good reputation with the store or they wouldn’t recommend him. Too, you can complain about a bad install to the store, which probably will get you a proper re-install.
I have had good experiences with Lowe’s recommended installers - flooring, windows, appliances.
Do-it-yourself has the disadvantage that a dishwasher installed wrong/poorly could cause a flood & you did it - it’s totally your nickel - there is no one to sue but yourself. Or, you could damage the washer & again, you did it - warranty voided. Add to that multiple trips to the Hardware store for parts/tools you don’t have; & the bruised body parts & ego you are left with after you are forced to call an installer who can’t come until next week - the half installed/unusable washer will “thrill” the wife.
I am a building contractor. I completely agree with this statement as most important. Most of the issues with a dishwasher install is a chance of leaking. The six foot braided supply lines are WAAAAY better and easier to install and safer than the old copper tubing lines with ferrules or heaven forbid the plastic supply tubing.
Some dishwasher installs I have done have been ever so easy.
Some . . . not so much . . .
Do it yourself. It will take you about 15 minutes. Its easier than hooking up the fridge. Why would you hire someone to do it?
I’m a Master Plumber so I would just do it myself, but if money was no object, I would open the Yellow Pages and call a real plumber for all my plumbing work and I would stay away from big box store contractors and plumbers who are desperate for cash flow because they can’t create and keep their own customer base on their own, and ALL handy men.
I’m with you. I would never pay someone to put in a dishwasher. I guess some people have money to waste.
I did it myself and it wasn’t that complicated. Just take your time, follow any instructions that seem to make sense, and don’t feck up.
Fun ‘til she stabs you.
Probably easier and just as cheap to have the store do it - Sears did ours for about $50 I think - brought the unit and unpacked it, took out the old one to haul away, hrew in the new one, and even knew which adapter kit to bring becasue of changes in the plumbing code since the last one was installed - hour job at most........
licensed plumber
Be sure to install a leak detector under the machine. Could save you thousands of dollars in water damage. Also consider a hose that shuts off automatically if it bursts.
Check out Watts FloodSafe hoses. Watts makes excellent flow control products.
Your wife is 6??? Is your name Mohammad?
Re 3hour run cycle. We called the mgr to complain about that. They said that EPA made them cut the drier power by 50% so it has to run twice as long! True story.
Anyone who is “handy” can install a dishwasher where there was one previously present. I’d do it for a twelve-pack.
