Dish washer installation. Advice please!

Posted on 12/01/2014 7:07:43 PM PST by newb2012

Dear FRiends, I need to replace my dishwasher. Would you recommend hiring a handy man do the job or getting it installed by the home store that I'd buy it from? Thank you all very much in advance for your valuable advice. Newb

it is a pretty simple thing to get done so I would go with whoever did it the cheapest.

If you are in any way handy with tools they are fairly easy to replace. Read some online instructions to give you an idea if you have what it takes.

Depending on where you are, some municipalities require permits and approvals for replacement of “affixed” appliances. If you’re in a good area that doesn’t have this insane overreach, have the home store arrange for the install so you can go back to them if there’s a problem later.

Hire a plumber. Your life, and your wife will appreciate it.

If you own a plumbing company... Hire a plumber.

If money isn’t an issue, have a quality plumber do it.

The store. The guys that install them will be very familiar with your particular make and model and can do it faster and more efficiently. I’ve installed several; not that difficult if you’ve done it before really.

Some of us do live in those areas, and ignore their stupid laws/rules.

I'm the guy that bootlegged a commercial pig for a year and called it the "world's ugliest dog".

Cops and code enforcement attended the BBQ.

Its easy to do but not as easy and paying someone to do it for you. Especially since they’ll take the old one away.

Oh, sure, you can afford a new dishwasher when children all over America are starving!?

Have you no soul, man? </sarc>

Go with the store where you bought it. Although my husband has installed several dishwashers over the years, Home Depot did the last one. We’re older now and it is not that easy to jockey it into place and to lie down under the sink to make all those connections. Make sure that they level it.

Do they require permits for repair an maintenance? Find where the drain hose connects under the sink, follow that back until it connects to a big, square metal part. Replace that part.

I have Viking appliances. All stainless.

I’d say if they are stainless have it installed by the company you buy it from.

They will be liable for the first ding or scratch.

Considering what I paid for em, I let those guys do the work.

If it’s a Kenmore with a replacable front panel, I’d install myself and save $150.

All dishwashers have three connections. A hot water supply line, a discharge line and the electrical connection. That’s it. If you have a crescent wrench, a screw driver and enough common sense to shut off the breaker while wiring the electricity and turning off the hot water supply valve while connecting the supply line you’re all set. The levelling legs are simple. It takes me 20 minutes to replace our dishwasher but I do everything in our house from the roofing to the painting to the electrical wiring I’m cheap. Do whatever is comfortable for you. The box store will supply a plumber or you can get your own.

Good point about the take away. Plus, there may be other benefits. In Wisconsin you don't have to pay tax on the appliance if it is being installed in your house (considered permanent). It's just a quirk in our state law, but it almost covers the cost of the installation. Check with your appliance store.

How old are the current water hoses and drain hose? If they are like mine (ages old) I would let the store where I bought the new one install.

I just replaced all my major appliances at once, and the cost of installation was included in the price. Hiring someone else to install would have been throwing money away.

A skilled plumber is the best, knowing the brand means almost nothing since the real issue is the condition of the customer's existing plumbing and updating or upgrading it, being able to eyeball it and advise the customer on any improvements or repairs that should be done and checking that old mistakes are not being repeated with the new installation are all skills that a journeyman or master plumber brings to the home.

The box store plumbers are of low quality and that is why they need the box store work.
