Posted on 11/27/2014 7:17:39 PM PST by Jamestown1630

Well, The Season has Begun; and I am 'In The Spirit'!

What are your favorite Christmas songs/carols and renditions?

Here are some of mine:

Speaking as somebody who listens to Christmas carols throughout the year, here are a few of my faves:

This performance of, 'Angels We Have Heard on High,' by Andrea Bocelli is about as good as it gets:

For my money, best female vocal goes to Emmylou Harris for her performance of, 'Light of the Stable':

When it comes to newer, contemporary songs, I've found two recent gems:

Florin Street Band - My Favourite Time of Year

and

Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Old City Bar

Speaking of that, it has been my life long mission to learn who sang it. I’ve been interviewing a lot of Baby Boomers, and I think I’m closing in on the answer!

Songwise, I’m very fond of “The Christmas Song” (Nat King Cole’s version.) When I hear that, I know it’s officially Christmas.

One of the great lyric lines, form “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas”:

Strings of street lights, even stoplights
Blink a bright red and green...

Gosh! Thanks for reminding me of that. It’s one of the songs I remember singing in Elementary School. A great song, and a great rendition!

My best funny one is Walt Kelly’s Pogo and crew singing:
“Deck the Halls with Boston Charlie”.

Other Best: Bing’s “White Christmas”.

One of my favorite Christmas songs, "Star of the East," was written by Amanda Kennedy in 1918. To the world of 1918, beset as it was by war, political and economic turmoil, famine and pestilence, the song expresses the hope of peace, joy, love, salvation and eternal life that inspired those who saw Jesus Christ’s natal star 2,000 years earlier.
