John Madden would have been all over him for even trying to make that catch. Madden said for years that a good receiver will always attempt to catch a ball with two hands. I think he knew he had a "free" play since he had been interfered with, so he tried for the one handed catch.He does practice them:

Turns out he didn't just catch it with one hand ... he only had
THREE FINGERS around it!

He also played for LSU, where he had to catch them like that all the time, or not get any receptions. Les Miles has this odd way of putting in the worst QB from his options.
