England women v Germany: Wembley game 'fantastic occasion'

England's sell-out Wembley meeting with Germany on Sunday will show the "special" nature of the women's game in this country, says coach Mark Sampson.

On what will be the women's team's first appearance at the new stadium, a record crowd of 55,000 will see them take on the European champions.

The attendance will be the biggest in the history of the women's side.

Sampson said: "It will be a fantastic occasion and we can show England is a special nation for women's football."

The crowd, 15,000 more than the men's team's September friendly against Norway, would have been bigger if the Football Association had not had to cap ticket sales at 55,000 because of safety issues around engineering works on the London Underground.

They could have explained the cap much more in depth.

I think I can finally understand why some Americans were so anti soccer during the WC. An article promoting women's football that annoyed me with every passing sentence.

How much are these fans paying to watch this gumph? If it is anywhere close to the money paid to watch the men's England versus Norway game then a comparison between the sports can be made. Until then the comparison is ridiculous.

"Germany are ranked second in the world [behind America]," noted Sampson, "but it's generally accepted that they are the best so it's a huge challenge for us.

That's a bit cheeky, inasmuch as Japan won the last World Cup, beating the U.S., and the U.S. won the last Olympics, beating Japan. Germany is universally acknowledged as one of the elite teams, the best in Europe, and Germany could easily win next year. But the U.S. and Japan can say the same, and a couple of others are close.

The U.S. team is faced with the eternal problem of long-time dominant teams: how do you rebuild while staying on top? They have a number of players over 30 who still produce, but should they go with youth and speed? The Abby Wambach question at forward is huge. The team's style changes completely when she is on the field. You never know which team will show up in any given game. Not a good situation, but Abby keeps scoring goals, so it's a hard call.
