Jason Collins, the NBAs first openly gay player, announced his retirement on Wednesday.
The 35-year-old Collins played 22 games with the Brooklyn Nets last season and was not on the roster this season.
He announced his retirement in a first-person story for Sports Illustrated, saying it has been 18 exhilarating months since he came out as the first openly gay man in one of the four major North American professional leagues.

They didn’t like his back court play.
“What a hero. 99% of Americans wont know his name in 3 months.”
I’d wager a similar proportion of Americans had no idea who he was until he decided to come out.
From reading his record, it isn’t that great.
Jason Collins? Appears he was 7'0" and played thirteen years.
Averaged 20 minutes per game over his career and . . . 3.6 points per game, 3.6 rebounds per game, and 0.5 blocks per game.
I won't even look to see if he made an All-Star Team or an all-team team, and I recoil at the idea of an all-locker room team.
Their poor writers may have to cover actual sports writing, like, you know, what the POS magazine was originally about...........
