Yes, even Hawaii. Tall mountain peaks there regularly get below freezing, and even get snow.

I suspect he picked a weather station high up on 13,796 feet Mauna Kea to make his point in the story about nationwide cold.

I had the same thought so I googled it. That is indeed where they recorded that temp, Mauna Kea.
