(CNN) -- A Sikh student at Hofstra University filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the United States Army, claiming the service refused to grant him a religious accommodation that would allow him to enlist in his school's ROTC program without shaving his beard, cutting his hair and removing his turban, according to court documents.
When Iknoor Singh requested a religious exemption from the military's grooming policies to enlist as an ROTC cadet in April 2013, his request was first denied on the grounds that his noncompliance would have "an adverse impact on the Army's readiness, unit cohesion, standards, health, safety, or discipline," court documents said.

Prince Chuckles, to his credit, supported the idea of creating a Sikh regiment as once existed in India during the Raj. Unfortunately, the government put the kibosh on the idea because they thought, probably correctly, that it would be challenged legally on the grounds that it was discriminatory to have a regiment that only permitted members of a certain race or religion to join. Unfortunate really, Sikhs are badass warriors almost as bad ass as Gurkhas. They would serve any army they belonged to proud.
Beards aren't worth diddly squat if you need to wear a gas mask!

Where did you see that in the American Army? and why would a modern Army captain be confused about long hair and beards in the modern Army versus before bio/chemical/nuclear eras?
You want the Army to go back to long hair and beards?
That isn't true, they have been a total pain in the American military for at least 40 years of political activism.
There seems to be some strange romanticism about these jerks as super warriors, yet we only have one in combat arms in the American military I believe.
You have been called on this before, you are a flat out liar to keep repeating a lie that you have been already caught on.
Why do you keep using that ONE green beret Sikh? The other two are a doctor and a dentist.
You have to be careful when these freepers start pushing the Sikh agenda against the American military.

Only three of 500,000 active-duty and reserve Army troops are Sikhs.
Yeah, the best count seems to be about 3 of them.
In attacking our American military, pound for pound, the Sikhs are the worse.
They never let up on their attacks and militantism and activism.
This isn’t Britain.
One thing they can do is run you through the gas chamber in basic training to simulate a deadly and sudden gas attack on the battlefield where the fate of our nation depends on enough of you surviving to defeat the enemy.
What does that have to do with this?
I don’t know why you so bitterly hate Sikhs. But I am citing their participation in the US military before 1980 or so. I am not surprised that there are few in right now, because it was just a short time ago they were allowed back in.
“Colonel Gopal Singh Khalsa joined the U.S. Army in 1976 as a Private, and served in the Special Forces Unit for 10 years on Parachute Status. As a Battalion Commander he oversaw an 800-person intelligence group and also received a Meritorious Service Medal with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster Award, amongst many other honors.”
“Sergeant Sevak Singh Kroesen enlisted in the U.S. Army reserves in 1976 and was attached to the Signal Company, 11th Special Forces Group after which he successfully completed airborne (paratrooper) and Radio Teletype Transmission Operator training. He was honorably discharged in 1991.”
Neither of these men were the green beret I mentioned, who was a Reserve Special Forces senior NCO in Arizona.
Shoot, if the guy is willing to fight my enemy as I am... I could care less what he looks like.
You just described 2 green berets from decades ago, and there is one who is in a reserve unit currently while you continue to spread a lie that you have been called on before.
(i>"In the US military, they also tend to gravitate to elite forces, like the Green Berets. As a group they almost never have any disciplinary problem."
I support the Army and Reagan, not your strange left wing militancy to bring beards and turbans to the American military, you agree with Obama, and he ended Reagan's policy in 2010.
You didn't do NBC when you were in the military, you think this is just about looks?
Those men, and their soldiers, didn’t have to wear MOPP gear.
With that attitude, he’s unsuitable for military service.
I guess the military should stop being so arbitrary and require a vote on all decisions. Sure it might slow things down a bit, particularly during battle, but it would be more fair than this current system.
If homie wants to fight on our side, let him fight. If it starts to rain bugs, rads and other bad stuff, I guess that’s his a$$. He would know it, and I beleive he would accept it.
Wow, you are totally clueless about the military aren’t you?
The Army does.
