In what many pundits have described as a wave election, many candidates who embraced and campaigned on the principles of free-markets and limited government saw great success this past Tuesday. In contrast, however, the citizens of Denton, TX voted via referendum to ban the oil and gas drilling technique commonly known as hydraulic fracturing.
Proponents of the ban cited contamination of groundwater and seismic activity associated with the disposal of wastewater as reasons to support the ban. Interestingly, there has never before been a proven documented case of hydraulic fracturing contaminating aquifers and the precise relationship between injection wells and seismic activity remains inconclusive.
This ban is significant since Denton sits atop the Barnett shale play, the third largest onshore natural gas producing field in the U.S.

A lot of moron UNT students no doubt voted for the ban.
Ping.
This was started by residents of a subdivision that was built after a well site was established, with additional drilling taking place. Just didn’t like the noise and blamed a failure to maintain a well head on fracking (idiots).
Even the local news couldn’t tell the difference between the drilling operations and the ongoing operations of a well site.
Denton is the “Berkeley” of North Texas.
Two public universities in town. One known for its Glee Club, and the other with a large contingent of lesbians.
"It's TWU, it's TWU."
I’m totally for allowing fracking on a national level and banning it on the local.
These local bans don’t hurt anything. The GOP needs to undo the stupid EPA water injection requirement and find a different way to lose the water.
These closed local areas will be drilled later, bringing in higher profits per unit. The University of Texas at Arlington has made millions off drilling under it’s campus.
The siren song of free money will win eventually.
Except for denying the mineral owner right to sell his property.
I think that they found Gruber’s “stupid voters”.
From what I have heard the college kids voted for this. And now the real residents have to deal with it.
I believe there’s plenty of residents who are against the fracking as well. I know one personally.
Well they are NIMBY morons.
drilling and lesbians are clearly mutually exclusive.
Shut off their gas and electricity. Apparently they neither want or need it.
