Pizza Hut overhauls menu amid US sales slide; curry and ginger flavored crusts on the way

Pizza Hut is letting customers play mad scientist, giving them the freedom to make pies with honey Sriracha sauce or add curry flavor to the crusts.

The atypical flavors and new ingredients are part of a menu overhaul set to be announced Monday and hit stores Nov. 19. Executives are hoping the revamp — which includes an updated logo and more relaxed uniforms for workers — will be the trick that finally jumpstarts sales.

Even as rivals Domino's and Papa John's have enjoyed growth, Pizza Hut has reported sales declines for eight straight quarters at established locations.

I would advocate adding some herbs for flavor, making fresh dough and leaving out whatever they put in that causes the explosive diarrhea. But what do I know, I’m not from Italy.

They don’t drench the dough in grease, worked for them for sever years in my youth, but they do have to grease the pan for pan pizza which is what 90% of the people order, because if they don’t you’d never get the stuff out of the pan.

Order a crust other than pan and you won’t have the issue.

Papa John’s does not have a Pan Pizza equivalent, nor do most other chains. If you order the hand tossed or thin, which is what most other pizza is it will not have the issue you don’t like.

Apples and Oranges trying to compare these 2 different types of pizza.

I stopped eating at Pizza Hut when I found out that they use something called “textured vegetable protein.” I want my pizza to be made with real meat and cheese.

Interesting. And to think that for 30 years Pizza Hut has done nothing to make me aware of the difference & alternative, a problem which introducing a paprika & curry flavor won’t correct.

One thing that has hurt Pizza Hut is the success of places like Papa Murphy's with their bake at home pizzas. I've had very good luck with their pizzas.

All the pizza chains have gotten so competitive, they have completely bastardized what a good Italian pizza used to be.

I would love to eat pizza. It would have to have whole grain crust, 100% pure tomato sauce, no corn syrup, only pure olive oil, all natural meats and other toppings, real parmesan cheese.

One of the chains around here actually had the nerve to advertise "parmesan-inspired cheese". They just don't get it. Around here, they're fighting each other for customers while Panera, Chipolte, and DiBella's have lines stretching outside their doors at lunch time.

Papa Murphy’s bake at home pizzas are excellent. Their staff is of Chick Fil-A caliber, too.

Three big reasons that Pizza Hut sales have been in decline is first, that they jam a huge amount of salt into their pizzas, likely in an effort to sell soft drinks.

Domino’s is lowest, with 194mg in one of their offerings.

Pizza hut’s lowest starts at 534mg, and they top out at 875mg, which is almost inedible to anyone who doesn’t normally have a very high sodium diet. They could do that in the 1970s, but since then everybody else has been cutting back on their added salt, resulting in a cultural taste change.

The second reason is that they do not make proper New York style pizzas with risen crust, instead going for “pre-fab” crusts that compare more closely with cardboard.

The third reason is that they keep pushing for a more upscale market, but with a downscale product. They were one of the first to try to boost their bottom line with gimmick foods instead of focusing on their core product.

The future does not look bright for Pizza Hut. Their competition is too good, and they would need to change their whole business concept to catch up. This can take decades to do right.

If people knew what a real Italian pizza tasted like, they’d never buy pizza hut again.. and also want to slap the cooks at pizza hut.

Crappy pizza is the reason pizza parlors fail. Dominoes was on life support from their horrid pizza. They are actually pretty good now. Maybe pizza hut can do the same. I still support the local pizza joint with dozens of beers on tap.

Our local wood-fired pizza pub makes excellent pizzas that are light and delicious, so you don't immediately regret eating there, unlike Pizza Hut. Plus they have a terrific selection of craft beer. We live in the golden age of beer and pizza, why buy from Pizza Hut?
