Don’t they hibernate, or at least become very inactive in winter?

No, they don’t hibernate. You can find just as many dead ones on the side of the road in winter as in summer (ok, you could if you could see under the snow).

We had one as an OUTSIDE pet when I was a kid, needle sharp teeth but lots of fun. Once she went into heat she just left though. She did get her picture in the Racine, WI paper once; playing with the neighbor’s German Shepard.
