My icons at the bottom of the screen have quite working. They just blink and don't bring up the site. (They've also moved to the top, and want them at the bottom of the screen.)
My 'favorites' 'button' has disappeared.
I cannot send out email. I get a message, 'put in an address before you click send'. I DO put in an email address before I click 'send' of course.
I have used 'Cleaner', 'Malwarebytes' and Avast. Nothing works. They all say after I run them, 'everythings in good shape'- but it's not. Same problems.
Can anyone help?
Like you said. It must actually be easier to do than to read about. LOL!!!
Didn’t know so many of you guys were up at 4AM LOL
I’ve had it. It’s bedtime for Bonzo.
See youse in da AM
Try turning it off and unplugging it for an hour.
I fixed something that was driving me nuts the other day by doing this.
I’m at work for the next 2 hours.
Go to your control panel and system and do a system restore back to a week or so ago. You won’t lose anything except maybe something that was put on your pc by mistake or malware that might be the issue. I’ve done it with success. Hopefully you’ll have restore points. Normally the system does one before Windows Updaes.
Microsoft Essentials is a great anti virus program plus it’s free. I’ve been running it for years now instead of AVG. You can install it after your restore. Remove AVG. Don’t want two running.
Good luck!
As predictable as the sunrise.
Is it free?
I see a free trial and a buy for $39.99. Or $54.99 if you want internet security stuff.
Am I missing something?
[My trend micro is up for renewal soon...I’m shopping around...]
There is a free version of AVG, and a cost-related one. You only get updates from AVG free once a week at best. One or two other negatives, but it does work fairly well.
That all said...I would still put McAfee near the top, and pricing is near $39. Norton eats up memory more than most, but it’s generally effective.
One - you’re not dumb....
Two - yes, you need to check everything in Safe Mode.
Three - Use Google fsearch or detailed steps
How to Boot into Safe Mode
Four - once you’ve done this - check those icons to see if they are working.
Remember, a PC is a “graphical user interface” where the user doesn’t actually type in code anymore for programs to work. Those Icon’s are paths/codes so when you click on them, the program is loaded.
If there is a problem at the bottom of your screen for those icons, I doubt it is your display, but it could be.
Therefore, it might be both a hardware (Monitor, Graphics Card) and software (corrupted, infected) issue.
Fifth, do a Google Search on “Blinking non-functioning desktop icons” and see what others have experienced.
Sixth, take a swift drink of whiskey!
Seven, being calm during a computer issue is uncommon - so be irrational - but the whiskey shot will help tone you down a bit.
Eight, report back here and tell us what you’ve found. Document your steps on a notepad so you know what you’ve done and what is working and what isn’t.
Hope this helps!

I use Comodo Firewall and Panda
there are also free links to other security software that will keep you PC clean.
If not a virus... To check, a lot of store bought viruses have a CD to boot (instead of Windows) from and will check your PC and eliminate the virus.
If not virus, you need to see if it is a program, Windows system files, or Windows driver / equipment file is causing the issue. Always split the problem in half and then half again.
The best way to narrow down the problem is go to the start menu and in the run box type msconfig, choose Selective Startup, select the Startup Tab and choose Disable all. Reboot your PC and see if the issue is still there.
If the issue is still there then it is not a program that loads automatically on startup, move to drivers. If the problem did not disappear. Run msconfig again (actually several times) and enable a few of the checkboxes until you find out which software is causing the problem. Uninstall the software.
To check for a driver issue, run in safe mode. Basically, reboot computer and after the computer’s splash screen (before the Windows one) repeatable press F8. There will be an option to run in Safemode. If the problem goes away you have a windows driver issue. If it does not go away, you can try to fix windows.
Go back in safemode and run SFC (system file checker) in the run box in the start menu. You will need the windows CD.
Basically you could likely get this fixed in 15 to 30 minutes if you knew a nerd. My advice, make friends with a nerd. I typically can fix or find out what is wrong with any PC in under 15 minutes (99 times out of 100). But the best way is to keep chopping the problem in half until you discover the source of the problem.
In the msconfig section it was suppose to say the below.
If the problem disappeared. Run msconfig again (actually several times) and enable...
So far, on all the posts to this, Post #17 (bullish) has the best approach.
If the task bar at the top has the "Start" button (the round one with a window in it), then do as follows:
To get the application task bar to the bottom,
- first put the arrow cursor on a neutral area on the middle of the task bar,
- then hold down the left click button,
- and drag the task bar over to one side or the other,
- then let go the left click button.
The task bar should then have moved to the side
(This shows you how to move the task bar by clicking and dragging, and gives you some confidence in trying what I tell you.)
If this has worked, you have done the right thing.
Now, do the same thing again to move the task bar to the bottom.
Then let me know you have done this, via private messaging, and I will tell you what else to do.
Bump.
I suspect you have some corrupted files in Windows and need to reinstall Windows 7. Not something for novices to do..seek professional computer repair. Note this reinstall will wipe out everything so you better have everything backed up. Once lost my hard drive twice in 6 weeks..first time due to corrupted files and the second to mechanical failure...fortunately I had everything backed up so I didn’t lose anything. Yes Macs have problems too. My wife had trouble with her 1 year old mac air and finally got Apple to fix it now the screen looks like dripping paint...another Apple problem
There comes a point where Windows gets so fried the easiest thing to do is a complete reinstall. This requires that you have been doing regular backups of your data. (I do one full image weekly, plus incrementals on weekdays—to an external hard drive.) You may have just had a real-life lesson in why this is a necessity. Widows has become so complex that you can drive yourself crazy trying to deal with the problems that develop as the O/S deteriorates. I figure, by the time I might reach for the whiskey, it’s time to reinstall! Good luck.
I was missing my volume icon...People on the internet told me I had to re-write my registry...
Tried your method...I now have my volume icon back...Thanks a bunch...
Try PCmatic. Great program.poll
Delete “poll”
I had a similar problem with icons on the desktop. When you placed the cursor on the icon, all icons on the desktop ‘spun’ like a slot machine. It was a virus.
