I’ve read in an article on line that a lot of Calimari (even served here in the US) is fake and is actually pig rectums. The article I read it in said the two are virtually indistinguishable, even to experts. I don’t know that I trust the article, but I hate calimari anyway. One might as well chomp on some bicycle inner-tubes.

The photo is likely real: Apparently pork rectums are a delicacy in some parts of the world. And supposedly they have a consistency similar to calamari. But the notion that they could be swapped for calamari is hypothetical: the FDA responded to the hype by stating that there has never been a single case discovered of pork rectums being sold as calamari. And probably for good reason: they are pungent to prepare, and they have an external market demand.
