I remember the roadside joints of the 60s. They went out of business because one never knew if he was going to walk in and get a great meal or spend the next 250 miles puking his guts out.

I eat at McD’s...2 Double Cheeseburgers and a soda for $3.50. It fills me up, and I’ve never puked my guts out afterward.

Folks eat at McDonalds for relatively cheap, safe food while on the road. I sometimes eat there in town when I want something fast. It is fast food, and that is not evil. If it was wrong, there wouldn’t be so many McDonalds...

That’s part of the appeal of the chains, Mc D’s or any of the others, you always know pretty much what you’re going to get. It’s not 5-star dinning and you don’t expect it to be, but it’s safe, filling and affordable. And that McRib is very tasty, sawdust and all.

As a teenager, I got diarrhea during a cross country trip, probably from drinking the water at a McDonald’s in Jacksonville, Florida that lasted until my family reached Myrtle Beach, SC. I managed not to “go” in my pants, but between the frequent stops to find a restroom and holding it in for hours on end, it was one of the most miserable experiences of my life, especially the last hour or two when most places with restrooms were closed.

One difference between now and the 1960s: with numerous web site reviews and blogs available, you can obtain more knowledge of the restaurants in an unfamiliar town. AAA and others produced printed guidebooks, but they didn't cover all restaurants, just the middle range to upscale places. By the time you had the guidebook, the information was at least a year old.

At least with McDonald's and the other chains, you know that food quality will be consistent. If you are health-minded, their salads are decent, as are the fruit cups.
