tech guy says (after soldering once) that it is unrepairable

If soldering isn't fixing the problem, a more drastic measure would be to order a new (or used) motherboard. Depending upon the laptop, you might be able to pick one up cheaper than a soldering job.

Also, you don't need to panic about getting your files off of the computer. You can pick up a USB hard drive adapter from Best Buy that will allow you to remove your notebook hard drive and connect it via USB to another computer, allowing you to get your files off of it.
