Windows 10 will offer Mac-like trackpad gestures

Anyone who has ever used a modern-day Mac will tell you that Apple gets its trackpads right. Sure, they look nice and feel great to the touch, but, most importantly, they are also properly supported in OS X. It offers myriad gestures to help users navigate as efficiently as if they were using a mouse. In fact, the trackpad is designed to feel like an integral part of the system, not as a bolt-on, as there are lots of things that can be done faster with it, like locating a window or opening the notifications panel.

The same cannot be said about Windows PC trackpads. They truly feel like bolt-ons. And it is not because they are poorly put together, but rather because the drivers never seem to be good enough to reveal the trackpads' true potential. Microsoft, however, wants to change that in Windows 10, as the upcoming operating system will support Mac-like trackpad gestures. Finally.

Today, at TechEd Europe in Barcelona, Microsoft corporate vice president of Operating Systems Group Joe Belfiore revealed that Windows 10 will come with multi-touch gesture support, seemingly to put an end to the different approaches OEMs have when it comes to their software implementation.

Belfiore added that the new multi-touch gestures that Windows 10 will offer are designed with power-users in mind, as this is the most likely group of Windows 10 users to take advantage of them frequently. A couple of the new gestures were demoed.

A three-finger swipe down on the trackpad will minimize all windows, allowing the user to quickly see only the desktop. To see the minimized windows again, a three-finger swipe up on the trackpad will do the trick. Repeat the gesture and Windows 10 will display Task View; a three-finger swipe to the sides will allow users to select which of the active windows should be brought up to the foreground.

To give you an idea of how similar the Windows 10 gestures are to the ones offered in OS X, a three-finger swipe up on OS X will trigger Mission Control (an overview of all windows), while a three-finger swipe down will trigger Expose (an overview of all open windows of an app). On OS X, minimizing all windows is done through a four-finger pinch. As you can see, Microsoft does things somewhat differently, to better suit the character of Windows 10.

These gestures will certainly make the operating system easier to navigate for those rocking a laptop, and it may also (hopefully) come in handy for Mac users who wish to run Windows 10 under Boot Camp. Belfiore says that more new features are coming, with consumers to get more attention starting early next year.

Really it seem to be the Synaptics multi touch pad drivers that are just crap in windows.. makes using the touchpad feel like your a junkie with the shakes

Seen on some the chat boards customs drivers that greatly improve..

Personally don't care for multi touch be it mac or windows

‘...Don’t put up stupid headlines that have no basis in reality, and you wont have to feel bad when people point out how dumb it is.”

If you read the linked story you would have seen that the “stupid headline” is simply copied from the headline at the linked article (as we’re supposed to do when posting an item). If you have a complaint, you should direct it to betanews.com instead to the FReeper who posted the article.

By the way, I think betanews.com is likely “neutral” and doesn’t have an axe to grind for either Apple computers or Microsoft based computers.

I have a MacBook Pro, late 2013. It's the best Windows laptop out there. The HP was just for fun.

It is interesting how much Windows laptops cost when they try to match Apple for hardware and design. The ones that have similar size, cpu and SSDs, etc. are all as expensive as a Mac. Why not just get the Mac, and run Windows in Boot Camp? I also have Parallels and run Windows that way on my Mac Mini, but it is a lot slower.

OK well, that's a function that I have never seen any utility for, except maybe to hide what I'm doing from someone walking up behind me. If I want a clean workspace, I just go to another workspace. Oh, that's right, windows dosn't have multiple workspaces. Sorry.

Ubuntu and Mint seem to lock up when I run “Try” from the DVD. At that point the DVD goes into the disc box and I go no further with it. It has been that way for the last four or five versions.

Like moths drawn to the light, Apple Microsoft haters are irresistibly attracted to any thread having to do with Apple Microsoft . The Apple Microsoft Haters NEED to hurl insults at Apple Microsoft users and Apple Microsoft products—they can’t help themselves.

It works both ways, in case you haven't noticed.

From a compiled program perspective yes. Although NT could run DOS programs, it wasn’t always very good at it, I don’t believe DOS could run any native NT programs. Most people today are ignorant of the fact they are running NT, not Windows other than in name.

Wow, in post 9 I was responding to this language: “...Apple’s user base are crackpot cultists....”. In doing so I did not “hurl insults” at Microsoft users. I do not take shots at Microsoft products or users of Microsoft products. My belief is “different strokes for different folks” and I certainly don’t “hate” either Microsoft or Microsoft users.

But if it makes you feel better believing that I hurl insults at Microsoft users, go for it. But you are, in fact, distorting reality when you believe that.

in a way it does, but if you look at just about any apple thread, you'll see that many of the posts start out with insulting Mac users and degenerate from there. I suspect that is because so many windows supporters have little, if any actual experience with apple products in general, and Macs in particular, that they really don't have much else substantial to say. The opposite is not true. I dispise MS-Windows, but it comes from much pain and frustration on my part. Having personally investested countless hours in it, I have no problem commenting on it.

Btw, I'm not an Apple geek, since I don't actually own any of their stuff other than a 3rd person handmedown iphone 4. I prefer to be known as a unix bigot if you please.

I’m sure that there are isolated Apple people who are “crackpot cultists”, as there are in any group, but in general, I don’t believe that’s the case.

But have you considered why someone might come to that conclusion?

What is it about the attitude and comportment of some Apple people that elicits such negative reactions?

I agree, the comment about “crackpot cultists” was a broad and insulting generalization.

You responded to that poster’s comment with an equally broad and insulting generalization.

It’s like a couple of kids fighting, and each one blames the other for starting the fight.

The parents just want the fight to stop.

A recommendation to all:

Discuss facts, argue for what you feel is right, but stop the insults and dispense with the holier-than-thou attitudes.

OK?

Sorry, we’ll just have to agree to disagree. My post 9 was FACTUAL. And if folks think it isn’t factual, IMHO, they are just not very observant.

Anyhow, I’ll continue my policy of NOT attacking Microsoft products or users of Microsoft products.
