The Taliban havent been defeated in Helmand, and the departure of the Marines raises questions about whether the Afghan Army will be able to fend off the Taliban.
This transfer is a sign of progress, said Brig. Gen. Daniel Yoo, the last commander of Regional Command Southwest, which is now effectively dissolved. Closing out this mission is a personal bookend for him. He was a Marine lieutenant colonel in the force that stormed into southern Afghanistan in 2001.
Between then and now, more than 350 Marines died in Helmand Province. In addition, more than 450 British troops were killed fighting here.
And they will always be in our thoughts and hearts, said Yoo.

The Afghan cannot, because at least half of them are Talibanists.
In a word, no they cannot holf off the taliban.
They won’t even try.
We should have flattened the place. And then left.
Nation building is a mistake.
Why won’t we learn?
Can, but won’t.
Kabul by Ramadan
And the other half don’t want to die for a corrupt government.
Wy would they do such a silly thing?
Which means jack shiite. Their lives were thrown down a rat hole because the 3 and 4 stars didn't tell Congress IT IS AN UNWINNABLE campaign, because the key assumptions came from the State Department, not military science.
Cowards.
Gen Yoo sounds like an idiot.
Sure. We just have to leave them a BIG supply of arms and ammunition so they can protect themselves.
What could possibly go wrong?
I wonder if the whole backroom story will ever come out. But it is Bush and Rumsfeld who are ultimately responsible here.
The Afghan army couldn’t hold off a sustained assaut from a squadron of post-menopausal librarians.
Nope!
On a positive note. This will probably make the world supply of heroin go down. Poppy/heroin production increased dramatically in the last 10 years. When the Taliban takes over again they will be back to stoning women, cutting off thieves hands and infidels heads. Poppy production will go down.

I believe I’ve read this line before.
He may be an idiot, but he is undeniably an Obola sycophant, else he would not be in charge. He must say these vapid things to make his messiah look good.
The short answer is no. But then, that’s the long answer too.
Our system of government doesn’t (shouldn’t) reside on the shoulders of 1-2 men. From a military standpoint, the generals have a responsibility to tell their civilian leaders when a campaign is ill advised.
