but we live on 5 acres...have three bathrooms, a large kitchen,a double garage and a big shop, with a walk in cooler and meat shop....we have fenced off garden space...we have many food items and canning equipment, etc...

I made the mistake of buying a gasoline powered generator several years ago. I have since purchased a propane powered unit and the necessary fuel to support hundreds of hours of generated power. It is the way to go.

I have a whole house generator that runs off my own natural gas.
Too old to run and too stubborn to give in.
