San Francisco's Chinatown is actually pretty good - far, far better than the SF neighborhoods inhabited by the tour guide's demographic.

The land, per square foot, is enormously expensive, but the cleanup of said FILTH and SQUALOR wouldn't be worth the price. The Chinese, NOT the American Born Chinese, are FILTHY when it comes to their homes and restaurants. They'll spend money on education, fancy cars and good addresses but on cleanliness?? NOT A CHANCE.
We have a Chinese friend, married to one of my oldest friend's brother, and SHE is the one who won't eat in Chinese restaurants.
If she HAS to she warns NEVER to sit by the wall, or you'd have to see the cockroaches running up and down the walls. This is in California.
