The Conqueror was shot In Utah, downwind from an active Nevada nuclear testing site. Susan Hayword, John Wayne, Agnes Moorehead, Pedro Armendáriz, and director Dick Powell all died of cancer.
Several other John Wayne movies are notable for stinking up the industry, including Wake of the Red Witch, but they didn't hold a candle to Circus World or Baby Face, a pre-code film which was never even released in the US (and in which Wayne played one of Barbara Stanwyck's conquests as she seduces her way to the top.)
Then, there were The Barbarian and the Geisha, and Without Reservations, along with Jet Pilot. Wayne may have had some bad scripts, but he also turned in a double-handful of bad performances.
