My mother has a front loader and leaves the door open when not in use. Never has any mildew.
We’re into 20+ years of service from our Asko washer dryer pair, bought new & moved once from Connecticut to South Carolina.
It has consumed 3 belts, 1 set of motor brushes, replaced the motor this year vs a second set of brushes, and 1 drain trap.
They are small footprint & stackable, require 220VAC (washer receives power from an outlet on the dryer). The washer only has a cold water connection & step heats the wash water to promote stain release vs setting at a hotter temp. It features ten attempts to rebalance & spins @ 10K + RPM so the clothes are only damp when done.
Not cheap but I consider the brand well worth the investment.

Maytag is Whirlpool. Both are not what they once were. I have had both old versions and both new versions. Appliances are engineered to last about 10 years.

As others have noted, Maytag is now built by Whirlpool to its design specs. We have a top-load Maytag washer and a Maytag refrigerator, both built by Whirlpool, and have had no problems.
Exactly. I came out better financially by dealing with Maytag directly, rather than riding on the coattails of a class action lawsuit.
My mom has had exactly two washing machines. Both Maytags. One was a 1970s version, and the only thing that happened to it was that the gear on the selector dial finally gave out (the dealer said it was a $20 replacement part). Mom decided at that point that she wanted a new matching set (the dryer was a different brand and color - hey, you did what you had to when you were young, right?). So, she bought the new set in 1994. To this day, I don't think she's ever had an issue with either the washer or the dryer.
Yes if you remember to leave the door open or if being left open does not offend the sensibilities of the owner (you’d be surprised)
My 3 sons at one time or another worked for an appliance installer and have come across dozens of stinky front loaders that were being replaced....sometimes for the sole reason of being stinky.
The Maytag dealer in Burnsville, MN suggested we avoid the Neptune and buy the mechanical (not computerized) washer and dryer in ‘92. They were still working when we sold the house in 2001.
Had rust in our ancient Maytag. Used a product I saw mentioned here called “Iron Out.” Ran it through the machine and never had a problem with rust, mold, or mildew again. Works awesome with white clothes too.
My neighbor bought the best ones he could find. They turned into money pits, failing just after the warranty ran out. Different highly rated name brands. He finally decided to buy the cheapest ones he can find now. Goes bad, he’ll just replace them.
A buddy of mine had his high-end, high-dollar machine crap out because of the circuit board. He found an on-line company that basically re-imaged (not sure if that's right) the motherboard and it's worked fine since. The price was cheaper than a replacement or a service call.

Not true. Maytag is a Whirlpool brand now. The old Maytag HQ and most of the former Maytag factories are closed.
Bosch is still in the game. I won’t buy any other appliances. LG and Samsung are an issue because very few places will service them when they do break down.
Although we've had top-loaders in the past, we are currently in a rental and have a Samsung HE front-loader set. We have been using home-made soaps for years (Fels Naptha, Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda, and Borax). The mix works great! The Naptha on its own is a great pre-treater, too. I had a work shirt that I managed to dribble some grease onto that went through three wash/dry cycles (I kept forgetting to pre-treat it). I figured the stain was permanent. I got a sliver of the Naptha, wet the shirt, and rubbed away at it fore a minute or two. Threw it into the wash and the stain was gone.
I just purchased an LG top loader, top of the line, set. So far, I love them. I find that there is a huge difference between stores on the cost of the extended warranty, which is essential. I had 3 sets delivered, and sent 2 back for reasons relating to the store (machines arrived damaged). I finally went to Home Depot and saved $300 in the process just because of the warranty.
Previously, I had a 27 year old, oversized, Whirlpool set which I gave up just because I was getting a new floor installed. That was probably the dumbest thing I ever did. Those machines were fabulous and in very good condition. Rplacement was just a precaustion. Best Buy didn’t donate to charity — just smashed them up.
After much wailing, I do like the new LGs, however. They clean just as good as the old Whirlpools — maybe better.
About 6 years ago I bought the 2nd most expensive Maytag washer. Went through 2 transmissions in the first year. Got tired of water damage and ditched it. My sister had the same problem with her front loading top of the line Maytag. No more maytags for me. Google it, you’ll see.
Bosch is very good. I have a front loader and it is great. It cleans everything better and uses less water. I NEVER use fabric softener. I put 1/4 cup of white vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser. We have has this washer for more than 15 years.
Fels Naptha is fantastic for getting rid of poison ivy on skin, clothing, etc.

Stick with the old fashion washers and dryers, just get large capacity ones. They will last longer, and cause less trouble.
My son bought his wife one of those fancy set ups, they didn’t last a year.
Our new old fashion ones are now 6 yrs old, the last set was 20 yrs old. Whirlpool.
I had hubby exchange the Maytag dishwasher in the new house that was supposed to be a Energy Saver that was LOUD, and took 2 hrs to run a load of dishes on normal wash with the older Whirlpool from our old house. It is quiet, and takes 45 mins. I’m hard of hearing with out my hearing aids, and that Maytag was so loud it drowned out the TV.
