The ominous math of the Ebola epidemic

When the experts describe the Ebola disaster, they do so with numbers. The statistics include not just the obvious ones such as caseloads, deaths and the rate of infection, but also the ones that describe the speed of the global response.

Right now, the math still favors the virus.

Global health officials are looking closely at the “reproduction number,” which estimates how many people, on average, will catch the virus from each person stricken with Ebola. The epidemic will begin to decline when that number falls below one. A recent analysis estimated the number at 1.5 to two.

The number of Ebola cases in West Africa has been doubling about every three weeks. There is little evidence so far that the epidemic is losing momentum.

Is it me or are all of you starting to feel a sense of impending doom?

I started feeling that sense of impending doom back in November 2008. It has grown to a fever pitch in recent weeks.

Pun intended.

I wonder how the media was reporting the Spanish Influenza epidemic in 1918 .....killed like 18 million in two years. This Ebola thing so far or AIDS is nothing compared to that.

This was brought to us courtesy of the insane liberals and the airlines who didn’t stop bringing passengers from these countries. At least one would expect the airlines to have taken evasive action!! Why are the crews even flying these trips?

If we wanted to get supplies to the affected areas we could have parachuted them down...but no...now we’re sending our soldiers. God help us and those who are being sent there - this is disgusting.

I am actually quite frightened and want to buy supplies so we can hunker down and hopefully survive until this blow over. I wonder how long that will take? Living in the middle of nowhere is sounding rather appealing right now.

An impending sense of panic, perhaps.

I would be willing to bet that deep in his heart, and maybe not that deep in his heart, the Obungler, if given the choice, will choose PC, and gladly put Americans at risk, rather than doing the right thing. Am I cynical or what?

Closing the borders should be the first step. If 0bama refuses, then perhaps we can finally get those worthless SOBs in congress to finally do something - they always act in THEIR best interests.

None of the naysayers can answer the simple question of what's going to stop it in Africa? There's no cure. There's no real quarantines going on. People can essentially move about as freely as they want. The medical communities are decimated over there. The economies are near collapse. What exactly CAN stop it? The only two ways are a shoot to kill serious quarantine (and it is likely too late for that) oR that it mutates into something non-deadly or much less deadly.

And with a wildfire of Ebola out of control in Africa there will always be sparks flying out causing blazes somewhere else.
