LENEXA, Kan. (AP) Tamba Hali fled Liberia when it was in the midst of a bloody civil war. Now that the West African nation is at the center of a very different crisis an outbreak of Ebola the Chiefs linebacker is lending his support to a humanitarian relief effort.
Hali joined officials from Heart to Heart International, based in suburban Kansas City, to announce Tuesday the construction of a clinic near the capital of Monrovia that will offer 70 beds for patients stricken by the virus.
People are dying, Hali said, and theyre dying at a rapid rate.
Liberia has been among the hardest hit nations at the center of the long outbreak, which has killed more than 3,000 people.
The medical system is overwhelmed by the Ebola epidemic, and every doctor and health official said the biggest need is more Ebola treatment units, said Heart to Heart founder Dr. Gary Morsch. The world must respond and urgently to get control of this outbreak.
As of Friday, there had been 3,834 confirmed Ebola cases and 2,069 deaths in Liberia, according to the World Health Organization. Forty-four percent of those cases were reported in the past three weeks, a signal that the infectious disease is spreading.
Liberians are smart people, strident people. It was a beautiful country at one point, when I was very young, Hali said. These are good people, God-fearing people, but this is a third-world country. They need help.
Hali, who fled with his father from Liberia at the age of 10, became an American citizen a few years ago. But he still has family members in Monrovia, on the Pacific coast, and Lofa County, which is along the northern border with Sierra Leone.
Theyve been fortunate, Hali said. My family thats there hasnt contracted Ebola.
Correct - where the poster asked if “he [Hali] shagged kids...?”
If you find comments like that funny or entertaining, then more power to you. You’re obviously more easily entertained than I am.
Not at all. I find the support of Paterno and Sandusky to be wrong.

...I agree with you (to an extent)...but do you really think this particular thread needed to be hijacked in that direction...?
So there’s now a sort of caste system when it comes to posting here? That’s a great selling point to drum up some donations. I guess.
he doesn’t like C&W. Horrors!
...I can’t stand C&W...but...
takes good care of his cat
...I take good care of two stray cats that come to my porch...
You've been here since 2000 therefore I owe you respect since I'm still new. But, honestly, I don't understand your remark at all. I consider myself reasonably intelligent but it went right over my head. Perhaps you'll be so kind as to clarify. Was it possibly intended for another poster? Thanks!
I think that there are some transgressions that are beyond the pale.
...but do they strut? :)
Thank you, re nortex.
We certainly don't disagree about that.
For the record:
I have always enjoyed humblegunner's skewering of posters who deserved it. I celebrated his crowning as "Blogger Overlord" some time back, bestowed by Jim Robinson himself.Hell, if he ever lays down the crown of "Blogger Overlord", I pledge to take it up in his memory and carry on in his stead!I have at times defended humblegunner against folks who thought he was overstepping. I also have sometimes thought he overstepped by attacking another FReeper unnecessarily and in poor taste. I felt this was one such instance, especially since it indirectly attacked an innocent third party who was doing something worthy of praise. The thread got thoroughly hijacked and has turned into a pissing match unworthy of FR.
I count humblegunner as an esteemed fellow FReeper. That's why my original comment on his comment was phrased so gently. :)
I've been here most of a decade; if you want to know what I think about humblegunner you can find plenty of comments in my posting history that run alongside his.
But, honestly, I don’t understand your remark at all
...I believe he was referring to your point about the site’s host liking him...as if that were the defining criteria about a post’s propriety...
...I think...it was rather odd comment...
Well, for what it's worth, I'll have you know that I like BOTH kinds of music: Country AND Western! :)
I think that there are some transgressions that are beyond the pale.
...of course...and those transgressions have been discussed numerous times on this site...some ridiculous, some quite reasoned...and I have held Paterno to a high standard, higher than most, and have explained why I do so...
...we should contain those discussions to relevant threads...which this one is not...
I like BOTH kinds of music: Country AND Western!
...horrors...
Oh, no, it's quite worthy of FR.
In fact, if a lengthy thread of any sort DOESNT have a good pissing match, it's hardly worth returning to. Sez me!
Ya know, now that you mention it.... you may be right about that.
But doesn't anybody care to comment on the actual thread topic? The linebacker for the Chiefs, and the Good Thing he's doing? Or has that topic paled in significance now? That's sort of a shame if so.
Thanks for the post.
At the risk of getting a zot, I have violated a Free Republic tradition more frequently than I care to admit. Yes, I'm ashamed to confess that there have been occasions when I have actually read the article before posting a comment. Please don't tell the boss. :)
Couple of days ago, you attacked me on one of your threads unprovoked. So cut the victim crap.
