A Utah couple is getting ready to welcome two sets of identical twins -- a one in 70 million occurrence -- after spending years in fertility treatments.
Ashley and Tyson Gardner are having quadruplets, after two implanted embryos split, resulting in two sets of identical twins.
The chances of two identical sets of twins is approximately on in 70 million, according to Dr. Alan Penzias, associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive biology at Harvard Medical School. There were 276 sets of quadruplets born in the U.S. in 2012, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The news comes after years of fertility treatments for the couple.
Ashley Gardner, 27, was diagnosed with endometriosis in her early twenties. The disorder, which involves tissue growing outside the uterus, meant she and her husband faced years of difficulty conceiving.
Eventually, as a last resort, the couple tried in-vitro fertilization this year. Only two of the nine embryos created were viable for implantation, they said.
"When you finally get there, you feel beaten down and still have a steep hill to climb," Tyson Gardner told ABC News.
Seven weeks after undergoing IVF, Ashley Gardner went to get an ultrasound to see if the pregnancy was viable. The ultrasound technician initially told them they were having twins. Then took another moment and looked closer at the screen.

Maybe one in 70 million for those getting pregnant the old-fashioned way...
Call ALFA...
Is he Moslim?
My neighbors have quads. Looks like identical twin girls and fraternal twin boys, but I don’t know for sure.
I also don’t know them well enough to ask about IVF or anything like that. They had an almost 3 year old little boy when the quads came along. I just bring them extra veggies from the garden :-)
Yeah with a name like Tyson Gardner he has got to be. Not!
Where I live there was a picture and newspaper article telling that there are 10 sets of twins in kindergarten in the same school here where I live. There must be something in the water.
Talk about blessed. I’ll be interested to hear how they live their lives.
There must be something in the water.”
I have lived on a cul de sac for the last seven years on which there are 12 houses. Ten of the couples have produced 22 offspring over that period of time and all of them are boys. All the moms stay home and the kids are outside all the time. Just a hoot to listen to them all play. Newly married couple moved in next door to me about six months ago and they said they chose that house over all others they looked at because they do so want their first child to be a boy. She just found out she’s pregnant and it’s a boy. Has to be the water.
Ten sets of twins in the same kindergarten has to be some kid of record though. Hope they are not identical.
After taking hormonal birth control since beginning puberty, American women find later in life that they have difficulty conceiving and then need to have the odds boosted resulting in multi-yield pregnancies.
Actions have consequences. Free love isn’t free.
Now pediatricians want to put IUDs in young girls who’ve never gotten pregnant, possibly setting them up for a life time of sterility.
Wow, I hope the babies are all born healthy...Neither of those two will sleep for the next 5 years...
I held up two fingers and said, "It's this, isn't it?"
She nodded and then said, "You're the fourth couple I've had this week with twins".
My girls had 12 sets in their graduating class, and 22 sets in the whole high school.
Anymore, it’s easier for the babies to live when born at 30/32 weeks. They give the shot for the lungs to develop and it makes a WORLD of difference. Less than a year ago, one of my family members gave birth to twins, early. They weighed ALMOST 4 lbs each at birth, and of course they loose a little weight for a few days after. So, they weighed under 4 lbs each when they came home.
Neither had to stay in the neonatal unit, they were healthy and strong. They were born at 33 or 34 weeks, and they’ve done well.
Now, FOUR of them? Guess it could be a tad bit more dangerous...or touchy...
But I pray G_d’s best on this little family.
I think someone needs to give a coupon book to them...for free naps :)
At some point this becomes a statistical impossibility and very quickly after that it becomes really spooky.
At least she’s cute and he’s normal looking. Much better than the normal run of trogs who have a litter of trog kids.

Some people might find our neighborhood beyond spooky. All the families homeschool, guys play poker one night a week, we have lots of neighborhood type gatherings and potlucks. It is rather interesting, particularly in this day and age when many people haven’t a clue as to who lives in their neighborhood, or even the name of the person who lives next door.
You are right, mine were single births, but they were 3 in 4 yrs. And the oldest was hyper active and slept very little. That was back before disposable diapers.
YIKES think of the cost of the formula and diapers alone.
Course they will have help I’m sure.

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
Your neighborhood sounds like a wonderful place to live. Maybe a little Twilght Zoneish.
There are a fair amount of Western Moslims and more everyday.
